Professional Background Dr. Richman is a Professor Emeritus of Engineering at Brown University where he taught for 36 years. Dr. Richman is President of Marc H. Richman, Inc., Consulting & Forensic Engineers. EGR 1013

Areas of Professional Interest Forensic Engineering –Expert witness in civil and criminal cases ranging from fender benders, slip and falls, to gas explosions, bridge collapses, aircraft crashes. Consulting Engineering –Metallurgy and Materials Engineering –Structural Engineering –Failure Analysis EGR 1014

Egr 101 an Impulse Course This course is designed to provide an introduction to engineering and get you involved right away in –Attacking engineering problems –Working as a member of a four person team –Learning written and oral communication skills –Using computers and simulation software –Doing laboratory and classroom exercises –Completing a capstone project EGR 1016

All of this using dc and ac circuits Tying together Physics, Chemistry, Calculus, as well as Electrical Engineering in this, your first engineering course. EGR 1017

How the course works Egr 101 is comprised of several components: –Classroom lectures –Classroom exercises –Laboratory exercises w/written reports –Homework –Exams –Capstone project w/oral and written report EGR 1018

Attendance Attendance is MANDATORY!!! You are expected to be in class on time and stay until the class is over! If you cannot attend class you should notify Prof. Richman and the TA ahead of time (if possible) and have a good excuse! –Sickness, family emergencies, religious holidays, etc. are valid excuses. EGR 1019

Behaviour in Class Attentive demeanor. No checking , cell phones, games No conversations with team members except in connection with team tasks and class topics. No eating or drinking in the classroom. Dress –Clothing is necessary! EGR 10110

Teams Teams of four students each will be formed. You will be in the same team in your other freshman courses. You will work as a team when so required. You will not be allowed to switch out of or into a team. This is like real life – when you start at a job and are assigned to a team – that’s it! EGR 10115

Computers There are two PCs per four person team in the impulse labs. You may bring in and use your own computer along with the team PCs. In a week or so you will be given an id and password to allow you to utilize the servers in ECE or MNE. EGR 10116

EGR Group Activity #1 Introduce yourself and learn each others –Name –Home town –Major Each group will come forward and one of you will introduce the other 3 group members, providing the 3 pieces of information.

EGR In-Class Activity #1 Using the internet, work in pairs to find an example of an electrically-based device that is either used or developed by engineers/scientists, in each of your majors. ELE and CPE majors – find an example of a device with a non-electrical component that is used or developed by engineers in your majors.
