THE GEOSET PROGRAM The pilot GEOSET project, which was originally initiated in Florida State University’s Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, is now a key component of the Florida Centre for Research in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (FCR-STEM) program, which is being coordinated by FSU’s Learning Systems Institute (LSI). GEOSET uses relatively inexpensive hardware and software, and Universities are ideally placed to produce materials. GEOSET is already streaming: Teaching modules: Workshops are being held with teachers to determine their requirements. Conference presentations and research seminars: All recorded presentations are being permanently streamed and several have been used at more than one event. Science inquiry experiences for teachers: Teachers grades 3-12 are interacting through GEOSET in an on-line, graduate course in Nature of Scientific Inquiry. In the following semester, these teachers are earning more graduate credits while engaging in scientific research with scientists that live near their schools in rural northern FL. The teachers are reflecting on their learning through Blackboard at FSU and presenting their research in poster sessions, attracting other teachers and scientists. These teachers’ stories are available in a free monograph entitled, Real Science for the Real World: Doing, Learning, & TEACHING! at Archival interviews: Recorded interviews with senior scientists are being added to an archive of historical importance. The information windows enable historical material to be presented in high quality detail. Graduate and undergraduate project reports: Students convey, from their own research experience, the fascination and excitement of science education at University. Presentations on controversial science issues Presentations on the learning process Presentations on cross-cultural and creative issues, e.g., Arts/Science Presentations have been streamed to UK schools and to conferences in the US and India. Children’s science workshops have been streamed to Iceland, Venezuela. One highly successful test of the approach has been carried out to some 3,000 children across all of Australia. Research seminars: A new lecture theatre at FSU will be permanently set up so that all lectures given can be essentially automatically recorded. Websites: The URLs of recordings are being inserted into the websites of research groups so that the viewer can access brief accounts by researchers of their work. Appendix A gives a set of URLs that link directly to representative presentations that cover the range of GEOSET recordings. Contributions: Mechanisms are being developed to allow educators not directly involved with the project to provide material and create links to other, GEOSET-like caches.

The second site, located at Sheffield University’s Kroto Research Institute, can be viewed at The site at is currently being recast into a searchable, data-based system to facilitate linking to other educational sites streaming material in the parallel video + data format. In addition to the GEOSET uses listed above, the pilot GEOSET project has produced an exciting range of approaches to presenting teaching materials, including the following: Research seminars: A new lecture theatre at FSU will be permanently set up so that all lectures given can be essentially automatically recorded.
