The term fine particles, or particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5 ), refers to tiny particles or droplets in the air that are two and one half microns or less in width. Like inches, meters and miles, a micron is a unit of measurement for distance. There are about 25,000 microns in an inch. The widths of the larger particles in the PM 2.5 size range would be about thirty times smaller than that of a human hair. The smaller particles are so small that several thousand of them could fit on the period at the end of this sentence.

The Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet has served as the Dalai Lama’s official residence since the 7 th century. The 14 th Dalai Lama fled the palace during the 1959 Tibetan rebellion against China. He lives in exile in India today.

China has controlled Tibet since Tibetans revere the Buddhist Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his efforts to peacefully promote Tibetan independence. In 2008, the 49 th anniversary of the 1959 uprising against China, Tibetans rose again. China crushed the rebellion and has moved huge numbers of Han Chinese to Tibet.

A Tibetan woman arrested by the Chinese screams in frustration and anger.

Since February 27, 2009 a total of 143 Tibetans have self-immolated themselves to protest China’s occupation of Tibet. The total includes 117 men and 26 women. Source: International Campaign for Tibet.
