Picking Up A Shipment Paperwork Training

Picking Up A Shipment  When you arrive at the shipper's premises to pick up a shipment, it is your responsibility to visually inspect the shipment to ensure it is in good condition before it is loaded.  If the shipment is already loaded, you won't be able to do this, but it is your responsibility to count the number of pieces you are receiving to ensure the count matches what is shown on the shipper's bill of lading.

Picking Up A Shipment  You should be present while the trailer is being loaded, but if the shipper has a policy that will not allow you on the dock at loading time, you must sign the bill of lading as a shipper's load and count and have the trailer sealed.  Remember to note the seal number on all copies of the bill of lading.

Picking Up A Shipment  When receiving skidded freight, you must sign for the number of skids, not the number of pieces that the shipper claims is on those skids.  When freight is not on skids at the time of shipment, the driver signing the bill of lading must confirm the number of pieces loaded.  Any overages, shortages or damage noted at the time of shipping must be brought to the attention of the shipper.

Picking Up A Shipment  You must not sign the bill of lading until the discrepancies have been corrected.  If a carton is loaded and you find some minor damaged condition, you should find out how much damage is done to the contents of the package.  For example, you could have three packages damaged and only one has damage to the contents. Before signing any bills of lading for damages, contact the safety department for your terminal.
