Graphing Calculator Designs Barbara Eikov and Kris Lee

Overview  Our goal is to design a graphing calculator that performs higher math functions and is superior to the Windows calculator  The three designs we have decided on keep in the mind our usability goals (Efficient,Learnability,Memorability) and user experiences goals (Helpful, Engaging, Fun)

Design 1  Layout of the most basic features assembled like a typical calculator  Pressing the buttons in the left column opens a menu similar to a graphing calculator  Can navigate through the menu using the scroll bar and/or right and left arrows

Design 1 Storyboard

Design Evaluation: Strengths:  Familiar design  Naming scheme corresponds to a typical calculator  Not cluttered Weaknesses:  Need to press a lot of buttons for the most basic needs.  Menus might be confusing as to where to find functions.  No customizability.  A lot of pressing buttons when the keyboard could be used to type regular expressions

Design 2  User types in all operation that they would like to perform if it is a basic operation  User selects a button in the left column to open a submenu of other functions  Buttons along the top include save/load layouts, customizability options, and a help feature

Design 2 Storyboard

Design Evaluation: Strengths:  No clutter  Buttons on the left are customizable  Can type in expressions with keyboard Weaknesses:  Not a conventional calculator style  A lot of menus-might be hard to find what you need

Design 3  Originally only shows the simplest design  Can perform most basic math functions  Pressing the option key will open a menu to customize other math functions

Design 3 continued…  Upon pressing Opt: There will be options for graphing, derivatives, limits, etc.  Can choose 3 options at a time  Adds buttons based off of selected options to the right

Design 3 Storyboard

Design Evaluation: Strengths:  Very simple structure for the most basic users  Customizable  Eliminates the need to trace through a lot of menus Weaknesses:  Initial setup of wanted design may be difficult  Only three customizable options at a time  A lot of button pushing when the keyboard could be used to type regular expressions  Cluttered when user wants a lot of functionality
