Subtracting Integers! By Zachary E. Hebrank

Rules of Subtracting Integers When you subtract integers, there are a few rules you must follow. When you subtract a number to a negative (E.G. [5 - -10 = ?]) the sign of the negative will turn positive as well as the subtraction sign will convert to a addition sign then, continue the problem as you would a regular addition problem.

Problems that YOU can solve! DON’T USE YOUR CALCULATOR! -10 – 9 9 – 9 18- (-20) 90-(-90) 5) 18 – 10 – (-6) 6) 13 – (-8) 7) 12 – 10 8) 9 – (-18)

!Answers! 1) –19 2) 0 3) 38 4) 180 5) 2 6) 21 7) 2 8) 27

The Number line The number line makes it so much easier to add and subtract integers. Its also used to multiplying and dividing integers.

More rules for subtracting integers! If both signs are positive, the answer will be positive If the signs are different subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value. The sign will be the sign of the integer that produced the larger absolute value.

More Integer Subtraction Problems! 1. 6 - (-9) 2. 123 – (-123) 3. 86 – (90) 4. 8 – (-1) 5. -21 – (6)

INTEGERS There are many different ways you can look at integers Negative [-6] Positive [9]

A different kind of problem This is a 1-step equation that involves subtracting integers Take x = -2 and y = -9 X – Y = ? Plug it in and subtract! -2(X) - -9(Y) = … The Answer is 7!
