C OURSE O VERVIEW The course will focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equation; (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

C LASS R OUTINE The mathematics classroom will be designed to help students take responsibility for their learning. Students will be expected to work in Study Teams on almost a daily basis. Roles will be assigned within the study teams, which will not only help students master the mathematical concepts, but also promote development of the 21 st Century skills need to be successful in college and the work force.

O RGANIZATION IS K EY Math Binder and Journal is an EXPECTATION Binder will consist of 2 sections: 1 will consist of materials for the current unit of study 2 will be records of graded assignments and assessments. I have found the students’ notebook organization can directly affect your scores on tests/quizzes and projects Will be referred to throughout the year

T EXTBOOK - C OLLEGE P REPARATORY M ATHEMATICS Go to for more informationwww.cpm.org The text is structured to actively involve every student in the process of learning mathematics The problem-based lessons provide a balance of basic skills, conceptual understanding, and problem solving strategies Each lesson has a mathematical objective and focuses on one or more of the mathematical practices. The course contains all of the content and practice standards required of the new state standards, which in turn will be reflected in the PARCC assessments, implemented during the school year. There is a parent section on the website with additional information about the design of the text, its research base, Parent Guides, Homework Help and much more.

G RADES Team Reviews 15% Designed to inspire in-depth conversations and collaboration around essential mathematics. Promote higher level thinking, collaborative skills, and self- assessment. The team test provides each individual student with necessary insights to help them prepare for the individual test. Individual Tests 70% Individual tests are given several days after the completion of the team test (usually a new unit will be introduced before the individual test is administered) allows students time between the team test and the individual test to prepare sufficiently All individual assessments will be created using approximately 60% of previously taught material and 40% new material Participation 5% Homework and Other 10% Also be assessed utilizing classroom observations, student presentations, participation quizzes, and/or portfolios, to provide them with a variety of opportunities to demonstrate mastery of mathematical concepts and ideas Expect homework daily Homework and Other 10% Participation 5% Team Reviews 15% Individual Tests 70%

H OMEWORK Almost all homework is assigned from the Review and Preview sections of the textbook review of old and current material and a preview of future material These problems spread the practice over several days and weeks so that you have time to master ideas and skills Your student should check their homework and access helpful hints through the CPM website or their e- book (will be given a username, password, and url address specific to your class).

W EBSITE T HROUGH D ISTRICT ’ S W EBSITE I have created a website through the district’s website. You will be able to find announcements, important information, assignments, and notes from the class. I will demonstrate this for you Great if Absent I will information if requested
