Advanced Conversation WEEK 6 CLASS 2

Think and Write Please spend 5-10 minutes responding to the following questions. This will be collected.  How would you spend the perfect day? What activities would you do? Where would you go? Who would you spend your time with?

Homework Collection  Please turn in your summary on the syllable video  Take out your idiom homework

American Idioms (Idiomatic Expressions)  Idiomatic expressions are a type of informal English that have a meaning different from the meaning of the words in the expression  Learning idioms are an important part of any language because they are frequently used in everyday speech and in the media  Using idioms correctly increases your English proficiency, and helps you sound more like a native speaker

Practice With Idioms  With a partner create a conversation using the idioms you each looked up for homework  To use the idiom appropriately you will need to completely understand the meaning  Your conversation must completely explain the idiom, because the rest of the class will guess what the idioms mean after you act out the conversation  Example: ◦“I was in a meeting with my boss today and her shirt was on inside out. I wanted to say something, but I didn’t want to embarrass her so I held my tongue.” ◦“Wow, did everyone else in the meeting notice?” ◦“Yes! Nobody wanted to talk about it. It was quite the elephant in the room.”

Perform Your Conversations  You will act out your conversation in front of the class  Audience you will guess what the idioms mean at the end of the performance-so pay attention!

Share Your Favorite Spanish Idioms  Say your idiom and the explanation in English  Are there any idioms in English that are similar? Brainstorm as a class!

Proverb (Saying)  A short expression that generally offers advice or wisdom  Examples: english-proverbshttp:// english-proverbs  “The early bird gets the worm.”  “Curiosity killed the cat”

Slang  Informal language that is used by specific language speakers, or groups of speakers within a language  Examples  Did you have fun at the party? Yea, it was a blast!  I didn’t see you at the movies last night, what happened? I tried to sneak out but I got busted.  What are the plans for later? Give me the deets!  What’s shakin? Nada, just taking selfies.  I’m getting good vibes from this place. Yea, it’s dope. Let’s check it out.  Ratchet, on fleek, bae, Netflix and chill are all example of “in fashion” slang popularized by American teenagers, but slang trends change frequently

Let’s Take a 5 Minute Break

Word Stress and Intonation  To increase your fluency you must pay attention to word stress (which syllables to stress in a single word, and which syllables to stress in a single sentence)  Additionally you must remember the intonation styles of American English (statements mean your voice goes down, questions mean your voice goes up)  Shape of a stressed syllable:  –Stress-timed Language

Vocabulary Practice: Categories  You will be assigned to groups of 3 or 4  A category of vocabulary words will be displayed on the board  The youngest person in the group will start by saying a word that fits into the category  Going clockwise the next person in the group has to say a different word that fits into the category  If you can’t think of a word in 10 seconds you’re out of the round  The last person who comes up with an appropriate word wins!
