Board Action Today Decide: –Implementation timeline for the Essential Skill of Writing –Implementation timeline for the Essential Skill of Speaking

Current Requirements in OAR Adopted June 2008 Required for Graduating Class of 2012 –Read and comprehend a variety of text –Apply mathematics in a variety of settings –Write clearly and accurately –Speak clearly and coherently

Work Group Recommendations Read and comprehend a variety of text Write clearly and accurately Apply math in a variety of settings Speak clearly and coherently –To be phased-in at a later date

Board Action in June 2009 Board voted to confirm reading requirement for graduating class of 2012 Board voted to require proficiency in “apply math” essential skill for graduating class of 2014 Board tabled discussion of writing and speaking essential skill to August retreat.
