Facts about Participles By: Corbin Pollock and Greg Martinez

What are Participles?  Workbook Definition: "A form of a verb that is often used as an adjective."  Dictionary.com Definition: "An adjective or complement to certain auxiliaries that is regularly derived from the verb in many languages and refers to participation in the action or state of the verb; (Or in other words) a verbal form used as an adjective."

What are some examples of participles?  Workbook Examples: "Toasted, Running, Worried, Roaring, Written, Singing, Dented, Surprised, Falling, Lost, Listening, Harvested, and Baked."  Playing, drawing, gliding, twisting, turning, touching, anchored, thrown, trampled, devoured, broken, fractured, and complicated.

Participle Phrases  In a participle phrase you must have:  A participle  An object  And a prepositional phrase.  My mother waved a torch over her head making a great ring of white light.

Where do Participles originate from?  Dictionary.com: "Participles originate from the Middle English and Latin."

What is the suffix for participles?  owl.english.purdue.edu: "-ing (for present tense) and -ed. -en, -d, -t, -n, or - ne. (for past tense)"

What are some examples of participles used in sentences?  Workbook Examples: Listening, I heard some useful information.  The freshly baked bread smelled wonderful.  Greg's Example: The man carrying the car fell off a cliff.  Corbin's Example: The painted picture looked amazing.
