Concept Talk How do animals adapt to survive?

Think about why animals might have to adapt or change, in order to survive or continue to live. What kinds of animals live near you? How are those animals suited to live in your area?

Turn to page How has the lizard on the branch adapted to its environment? Has the fish in the photo changed in order to defend itself? How has the lion adapted to its environment?

Adaptations –acts of changing to fit different conditions We had to make some adaptations when our flight was cancelled. predators- an animal that preys on other animals Teach your partner this word.

Defenses- a barrier or a means of fighting off an attack He let down his defenses and I made my move. Fearsome- causing fright I find being at high altitudes fearsome. Teach this word to your partner.

Graphic Sources We are going to read about how ants adapt to survive. Let’s look at the illustration on page 79. What is pictured here? I can see what these tiny ants look like because the image has been enlarged. Now when I read the article, I will know what the body parts look like.

Possessive pronouns have two forms: One is used by itself Mine, yours, hers, ours, and theirs

One is used before a noun: My, your, her, our and their Some are used alone and before a noun: His and its Do not use an apostrophe with a possessive pronoun
