Domain 6: Reminder Goal is to find agreement on the principles of the guidelines to create a set of guidelines for Maine. Please to comment on any of the guidelines in the document itself. If possible, please mention the specific guideline. This is a discussion among all participants– and all questions/comments/responses are welcome!

Domain 6: Recovery-Oriented Care Maximizes the Use of Natural Supports and Settings Understanding a person’s local community, including its opportunities, resources and barriers is essential to recovery planning.

Domain 6: Maximizing the Use of Natural Supports and Settings Key point: Asset-based community development (ABCD)* – All persons have talents, gifts, strengths to contribute to, and thereby, shape community – Capacity, strength and resources are also derived from community associations and institutions – Mapping this helps people in recovery access a range of naturally occurring social, educational, vocational, spiritual and civic activities to return to valued roles in community life *

System/Agency Level Use of community collaboratives, including leadership within the system as well as from the community at large, to develop a shared vision and increase capacity to promote long- term recovery. – This includes Vocational Rehabilitation, Adult Education, Recreation Depts., Regional Workforce Development Boards, faith communities, primary medical providers and more.

System/Agency Level Create community resource guides, capacity inventories and asset maps collaboratively through active involvement of community stakeholders. Asset maps and capacity inventories include options recognizing diversity based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, trauma history, religious affiliation and personal interests

Practitioner Level People in recovery are viewed as citizens and recognized for gifts, strengths, skills and resources they have to contribute to community life. High value is placed on less formal community aspects of such a neighborhood gatherings, book groups, craft circles, restaurants, etc. Having fun!!

Practitioner Level The relational process of gathering information is as important as the information collected. Supportive guidance is offered to community organizations to welcome people in recovery. Address meaningful occupation as this enhances long-term recovery. Make opportunities to see people in their own environment rather than a clinic/office.

Questions What specific changes would you suggest to the text? Do you agree with the key concepts and language of this domain? Are you familiar with the ABCD process for community mapping developed by Kretzmann and McKnight or similar tools? What experience do you have with local community collaboratives as identified in this domain? Other comments?

Questions How have you seen or experienced social connectedness with the broader community impact recovery and resiliency? Are people in recovery engaging in meaningful occupation as a path to wellness? What do you think about going to the person’s own environment to interact and observe? Other comments?

Feedback on the Domains During the monthly webinars Create local discussion groups and send in your comments Submit comments at Send written comment to: Recovery for ME OAMHS SHS #11 2 nd Floor Marquardt Building Augusta, ME 04333
