. Safe Patient Handling Needs From Patient Admission to Discharge Identifying the Risk Factors Speakers: Paula Pless & Robert Guest

. A Comprehensive Safe Patient Handling and Movement Program… Identifies, Reduces and Mitigates the Injury Risk Factors for Both the Patient & Healthcare Staff.

. Keys to identifying risk factors: Knowledge of the patient’s history (medical, functional & social) Knowledge of the environment (hospital/unit, home & community) Knowledge of the staff (patient, equipment, & policies)

. Our Journey Begins A 40 y.o. female patient arrives in your emergency department after falling at home. She was self transferring OOB to her wheel chair by pivoting when the fall occurred. She c/o pain & swelling right shoulder & knee. PMHX-MS (numbness right UE & LE, blurred vision, bowel & bladder dysfunction, lack of coordination Social history: unemployed Husband & family perform stand pivot transfer as needed OOB, to commode and shower chair. Patient occasionally ambulates with rolling walker.

. Questions -the audience will be responsible to apply their current knowledge and or their newly obtained knowledge from the conference to take the patient safely from Admission to Discharge. ~identify risk ~select the appropriate SPH equipment ~reduce risk ~mitigate the potential risk factors
