Using Socrata to find information about Indiana Meth Labs from 2007 to Present A joint project by the Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Section and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management

Once on the Site: Scroll down to the image of the map of Indiana. Click on “Menu Box” Click on “More Views” Select your search preference: ○ “ISP Meth Lab Locations Map” ○ “ISP Meth Lab Locations Table” The same information is contained in both.

Using the Map:

Zooming in on the Map: 1.In the upper left corner of the map is the slide zoom bar for zooming in and out. “Zoom +” brings you into a smaller area. More dots will appear. 2.You can use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and out. 3.You can double click on any geographical area to zoom in. 4. Click on any of the larger dots. It will zoom you into a smaller area. Additional dots will appear. The blue dots contain the specific information about the lab incident at that location. You can obtain the occurrence report* by clicking the blue dot and the link in the information box. OR *see slide 9 for information on the Occurrence Report

Another Search Option: In the top right portion of the screen is the search box – Find in this Dataset. Tips for this search tool: Type any portion of the address needed in the box – city, street name, street number, county The less info entered, the more results will likely return. Any record containing the word or number entered will provide a dot on the map. If 2345 is typed in the search box, it will bring up dots for any address that has 2345 in it. If Washington is typed in the search box, a dot will appear for every location that has Washington in its street, city or county. Zoom into or click on the record needed.

Using the Table: When ISP Meth Lab Locations Table is clicked, the results are shown above. Every entry as required by law will be listed. The results can be sorted using the same searches as outlined before using the “Find in This Dataset” search box. The column “Occurrence Report” contains a hyperlink to the occurrence report completed for the lab incident. See slide 9 for information on the occurrence. **The “Location” column has been redacted from the screen shot above to protect any record that may be removed at a later date.

Search Results: In the screen shot above, Ohio was searched. Any record with the word Ohio in it will return in the search results. Double clicking the line symbol will drop the information to the bottom of the screen for that record, providing a preview of the data (red arrow). All columns can be sorted by clicking the lines symbol next to the information button at the top of each column (green arrow). Clicking on the link under the “Occurrence Report” column will provide the occurrence report for that lab. See slide 9 for information about the occurrence report. **Location and VIN column results have been redacted to protect any record that may be removed at a later date.

Vehicles, Boats and Other Info:  Vehicle Identification numbers (VIN) for cars, travel trailers, RVs and mobile homes are included in the most recent data, if available at the time of the lab incident.  Hull Identification Numbers (HIN) for boats are included if available.  The VIN or HIN can be entered and searched.  Most trailer homes are searchable by address only.  To Search: If the VIN starts with ABCDE, type that data in the search field and sort through the results.  If a meth lab incident is not tied specifically to a particular address, the investigating officer will typically use the hundred or thousand block of the road or street on which the lab occurred, the nearest intersecting streets/roads or just the name of the road or street without a numerical distinction.

Occurrence Reports: The Occurrence Report is a public form available to anyone looking for information on a particular lab location. It contains the: date, address, lab location (residence, outbuilding, etc.) chemicals and reactions found at the lab County Health Department and Fire Department notified VIN number if a vehicle, boat. RV or travel trailer was involved.
