Final Project FHS 2450 HUMAN SEXUALITY MEGAN HANSEN

Brokeback Mountain This movie is about two men who develop a homosexual relationship that was very reluctant at first. They first meet at a job on a mountain in Wyoming herding sheep in the summertime, Jack was the first to make a sexual advance at Enniss. They told each other this would be a one night incident and got into a fight when their job was stopped short. Jack and Ennis moved away and both got married to females and had children. Throughout their marriages they would meet to go on fishing trips together because Enniss was in fear of people finding out they were in a homosexual relationship and he also did not want to abandon his family. Both of their marriages failed and Enniss’ wife had caught him kissing Jack and confronted him about that incident. Jack has been asking Enniss to live together and build a life but Enniss was always reluctant. Their last meeting ended in an argument and Jack ends up passing away in a tire accident and Enniss wanted to spread Jack’s ashes on the mountain they met on but Jack’s parents want him in the family plot. Enniss finds a shirt of Jacks that he keeps and realizes that was his true love.

Boys Don’t Cry This is a movie that was based on a real life story of Brandon Teena. Teena is a female to male transgender and went by Brandon. Brandon becomes involved with a female, Lana, who doesn’t know Brandon is really a female. Brandon has a couple close calls with Lana almost finding out when he goes to jail and is in the women’s section. He tells Lana that he was born a hermaphrodite and will be getting a sex change. Also when they are rubbing on each other’s bodies and he stuffs socks in his pants. Tom and John are Lana’s friends and they find an article in the newspaper about Brandon’s real name being Teena and forcing him to pull down his pants in front of Lana to prove to her that he is really a female. They then kidnap Brandon and beat and rape him and take him back to their house. Brandon gets out a window and files a police report with the help of Lana and hides out in another friends shed. John and Tom end up shooting and killing Brandon in front of Lana.

Milk This movie is about Harvey Milk who is a politician who is gay and also a gay rights activist. He is the first to be elected in office as an openly gay person in California. Harvey wins his third campaign in Harvey’s supervisor is Dan and they do not have a good relationship but Harvey thinks Dan is gay but will not admit this. Then Dan wanted Harvey to help him prevent a psych hospital from opening in exchange to support Harvey’s gay rights ordinance. Harvey denies to help Dan and because of this, Dan tries to elect Proposition 6 which would ban gays and lesbians from working in public schools. Harvey has a lot of supporters and they defeat proposition 6. Dan then quits the board and Harvey has taken his job. Dan then tries to get his job back but cannot because of Harvey. Dan then comes into city hall with a gun and shoots and kills Harvey.

Main Concepts  Brokeback Mountain is about homosexual men where one is afraid of revealing who he is and who he is in love with. His lover dies and that is when he realizes what he has lost and regrets never pursuing the relationship further.  Boys don’t cry is about a female to male transgender who is afraid of revealing who he is out of fear of acceptance. He ends up finding someone who accepts him for who he is. Two people ended up killing him because they couldn’t accept him for being a transgender.  Milk is about a gay rights activist who is openly gay and a politician. He has many supporters but his coworker Dan felt threatened by him. Because Dan felt threatened by Harvey and that Harvey was better than him, he assassinated Harvey.

Comparison of Films  Brokeback Mountain and Boys Don’t Cry both are afraid of revealing their sexuality to other people  All of the movies are about sexuality and how society was unacceptable of their preferences  Milk and Boys Don’t Cry both were murdered by someone who did not approve of their lifestyle and felt threatened by them  Milk and Boys Don’t Cry were both based on real life people and events that happened  Both Enniss and Brandon were afraid of letting people know their orientation

Relation to Human Sexuality Class  These movies helped put into perspective the reality of how some people are treated in our society. Two of these films were based on true stories and in both of them, they were murdered by someone who did not accept their lifestyle. Its hard for me to imagine some one taking another human’s life because they have a different opinion of how you should live your lifestyle. Human sexuality has many different beliefs and values that can also depend on your culture. That doesn’t mean they are wrong because they have a different orientation. Its who that person is and almost like killing someone because they do not like green beans like you which is mind blowing. Everyone has their own opinion and beliefs and this class has showed me a variety of those that I never knew or learned about before. This has helped me not be so judgmental like I had been and actually know that everyone is human regardless of their orientation. This will also help me grow further and teach my children the same thing and to have an open mind and not follow the labeling done by society.
