Developing a City Approach to Active Citizenship Sharon Squires Director, Sheffield First Partnership/Sheffield Executive Board

Presentation content Why is Active Citizenship important? History to SEB activity. Where are we now? Next steps. Discussion; knowledge, skills and role of SSCP.

Why is active citizenship important? Definition of active Citizenship varies An individual who gets involved in public life and affairs at a local, national and international level Differences in opinion; whether citizens are more or less active (e.g. drop in voting v campaigning through social media) Agree that citizens will need to play a greater role in their own, family and community wellbeing? (civil society)

SEB Activity Shared interest across many SEB Partners (Council, NHS, Police, VCF, Fire and Rescue, Universities, College etc). Do we have a city approach? Initially set up a SEB task and finish group on community assemblies and partner panels. Recommendation that they focus on community engagement and partnership, working together across agencies.

SEB Activity The Council, NHS, Police working group; what's already happening and how does it match citizen expectations? Confused and disjointed picture within and across organisations. Focused on achieving organisational outcomes? Citizens focused on community wellbeing and individual objectives e.g. employability

Next Steps Looking at Practice elsewhere (Peterborough, Bradford, Newcastle ). Leeds Commission for Future of Local Government; Social Entrepreneurialism Programme - University of Sheffield and Sheffield Executive Board

Next steps A framework for a city approach? Based on what success would look like (outcome focus). Citizen driven rather then organisational driven? Targeted or comprehensive? Or is enough already happening? Discussion
