OPIM 5894 ADVANCED PROJECT MANAGEMENT CORNING: EARLY-STAGE OPPORTUNITY IDENTIFICATION SURESH NAIR, Ph.D. Professor, School of Business University of Connecticut, Storrs, USA

Corning Inc: Early-Stage Opportunity Identification 2 Issues Raised  Identifying large business opportunities  Collaboration between marketing and technology  Market pull vs. Technology push  Sustaining investment in corporate R&D  Innovation recipe (keystone component, regulations, IP and special capital investment based strategic control) Prof. Suresh Nair, University of Connecticut

Corning Inc: Early-Stage Opportunity Identification 3 Team Assignments – Team 1, Team 2 and Team 3  Pick any one completely novel product opportunity from your workplace, or from your experience or general technology awareness  Run that idea through each step of the 7 Questions (Exhibit 5) and evaluate it (substitute your firm for Corning in each question).  If you were leading EMT, be specific about what data would be needed, resources required, staffing (both marketing and technical) required, their charge and geographical placement, and time it would take to evaluate each question  Specify the techniques and research you would use to answer each question. Give mockups of what the the techniques/research would look like, if possible.  Speculate on the answers to the questions, as necessary. Prof. Suresh Nair, University of Connecticut
