The Prevent Duty 23 November 2015 B Cannon, Principal
Department for Education From 1 July 2015 all schools are subject to a duty under section 26 of the Counter- Terrorism and Security Act 2015, in the exercise of their functions, to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”. This duty is known as The Prevent Duty.
Harris Academy Purley Kendra Hall Road Surrey CR2 6DT T: F: “Schools can build pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting fundamental British values and enabling them to challenge extremist views. It is important to emphasise that the Prevent Duty is not intended to stop pupils debating controversial issues. On the contrary, schools should provide a safe space in which children, young people and staff can understand the risks associated with terrorism and develop the knowledge and skills to be able to challenge extremist arguments” DfE “The Prevent Duty”

Proud to be British - British Values Despite the mix of ethnicity, religion, sexuality, disability or gender we all share the same values: 1democracy 2respect for the rule of law 3individual liberty and freedom of speech 4mutual respect 5tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
ISIS = Islamic State (Iraq & Syria) Became prominent in 2014 In June 2014, the group formally declared the establishment of a "caliphate" - a state governed in accordance with Islamic law, or Sharia, by God's deputy on Earth, or caliph It has demanded that Muslims across the world swear allegiance to its leader - Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi - and migrate to territory under its control IS has also told other jihadist groups worldwide that they must accept its supreme authority. Many already have, among them several offshoots of the rival al-Qaeda network IS seeks to eradicate obstacles to restoring God's rule on Earth and to defend the Muslim community against infidels and apostates. The group has welcomed the prospect of direct confrontation with the US-led coalition, viewing it as a harbinger of an end-of-times showdown between Muslims and their enemies
ISIS - Extremist Views: They despise our modern, multi-racial, multi-cultural societies They want Muslim people to feel loathed in their European homes and driven to join them in Syria They want them to feel that they have only one true home – within the Islamic state They want our western countries to become fearful, closed, authoritarian societies They want us to divide and become weaker, less tolerant, less together – they want us more like them OUR RESPONSE: We must not let these attacks create tension and division between us We mustn’t let a climate of fear and suspicion unbalance our richly diverse communities We mustn’t condemn a whole community of innocent people for the actions of a tiny minority
Isobel Bowdery is a 22 year old survivor of the concert hall massacre. She played dead for over an hour as those lying face down around her were callously executed by the “circling vultures”. Her account is harrowing but its also inspirational. Its mainly about the helpers. But being a survivor of this horror lets me shed light on the heroes. To the man who put his life on the line by covering my brain while I whimpered … to the complete strangers who picked me up from the road and consoled me during the 45 minutes I genuinely thought my boyfriend was dead.. to the man who held me and told me everything was going to be alright despite being all alone and scared himself, to the friend who offered me shelter and went out to buy me clothes so I wouldn’t have to wear my blood-stained top. To all of you who have sent caring messages – you make me believe this world has the potential to be better.
