COMMUNICATION ENGLISH 3 March 9 th 2012

Presentations What makes a good presentation?

Presentations What actions/behaviors should be avoided?

Videos Watch these two very different presentations.

Videos In a group, discuss the differences between these presentations.

Introduction of an…introduction How should you start an introduction speech?

Which do you find effective? “Today I’m happy to introduce you to Ivan, who recently came to the university from the Czech Republic. “Good morning. I’d like to introduce you to Su, who is a nurse form Bangkok.” “Hi everyone. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to someone who never expected to be studying art at this university. His name is Tony. “I’m pleased to introduce you to a woman who’s interested in stones and bones. She's’ studying physical anthropology here at the university. Her name is Maddy.”

Organization Essential for any kind of presentation. WHY? Even more important than language skills. A well organized presentation will: Allow the audience to more readily follow and understand the presentation. More easily draw the audience in. Give credibility to the speaker.

Organization Organize the information for an introduction speech. Look for two different ways to organize it.

Organization Current studies and research assistantship. Closing 1 st -job – military (1992) M.A. degree (1998) Current interests Major research area of interest 3 rd job (1999) Introduction of speaker: name and country Family: new baby American football B.A. degree (1992) 2 nd job (1994)

Concluding How should a speech end? That’s all folks! I’m finished. That’s all I have. 끝

Concluding
