Learning Intention Develop an understanding of ‘smart’ and ‘modern’ materials, including: thermochromic materials; photochromic materials; polymorph; shape memory alloys; shape memory polymers

Smart materials are reactive materials. Their properties change with exposure to stimuli, such as electric and magnetic fields, stress, moisture and temperature.

Shape Memory Polymer

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are polymers have the reactive capability to change shape when heated.

SMP - Polymorph Used for - manufacturing awkward shapes such as ergonomic handles, joining components together, making moulds for vacuum forming

Shape Memory Alloys

There are different types of SMA, but the best (and most expensive) is nickel-titanium, known as Nitinol. Nitinol changes length when heated. Can you think of an application for this Smart Material?

Piezoelectric Materials
