Quality of the Month Good Communicators: Listening and Speaking What’s Happening in Grade 7? Intermediate Boys Volleyball and Girls Basketball action has begun, as well Student Council. Some Student Council initiatives already underway are the Thanksgiving Food Drive this Week, Project Hope to help support the Refugee Crisis, and a Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest. Upcoming Dates -October 5 th -9 th Thanksgiving Food Drive -October 12 th Thanksgiving (No School) -October 14 th Camp Brebeuf Parent Meeting 6:30p.m.; Meg Popovich Presentation 7-8:30p.m.; Norcard Fundraiser Order Due -October 19 th -23 rd Project Hope -October 22 nd Confirmation Parent Meeting St. Ambrose 6:30p.m. Thanksgiving is a time to count our blessings; although life is filled with many challenges, this is the time of year we are grateful to the many kind people in our lives who love and support us so that our students believe, achieve and succeed. Thank you for all you do help your child succeed. May God bless you and your family this Thanksgiving Holiday. Our Terry Fox Run and Cancer Fundraiser was a huge success. On Friday, September 25th we ran to raise awareness for cancer research and honor loved ones we know who have been affected by cancer. Thank you for your generosity. Camp Brebeuf is coming soon (November th ). The students and I are excited about this amazing opportunity to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, develop our leadership and community building skills. There will be an Parent meeting on October the 14 th at 6:30 p.m. in our classroom. A package will be sent out that evening, and to students whose parents could not attend the following day. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call. Please join us after for a special presentation in the gym by Dr. Meg Popovich on teaching our children how to be resilient in navigating their way through life. Halloween Safety Tips for Older Kids Make sure kids are visible (reflector strips, flashlights) Encourage your child to use crosswalks when possible to cross the streets, or look carefully both ways and hold younger siblings hands Know your child’s route and return time (cell phones are a great way to stay in touch) Advise your child to never enter anyone’s house they don’t know Encourage your child to not eat any candy that has not been thoroughly checked

News in French Bonjour! My name is Mademoiselle Sliter. I’ll be teaching your child French this year. This year we will be focussing on oral speaking, listening skills, reading and writing. We are beginning the year with learning French prayers, practicing using common classroom sentences used to communicate with one another, calendar and time, numbers as well as presenting information used to describe personal information including physical descriptions, speaking about family traits and students’ individual interests. I look forward to enhancing your child’s ability to communicate ‘en français’! What are We Learning? Language: We are extending our understanding of texts by connecting ideas in them to our own knowledge, to other texts, and the world around us. We will focus on ordering ideas and supporting details to create multi-paragraph pieces of writing about a specific topic (e.g. Blog, Report, or Website). We will also work on developing our oral communication skills (e.g. tone, pace, volume). Math: We are ordering, representing, adding and subtracting integers using a variety of strategies and tools (e.g. number lines, algorithms, coloured tiles). We will also begin our unit on “ Organizing, Collecting, and Analysing Data” creating different graphical representations and understanding measures of central tendency (e.g. mean, median, mode). Religion and Family Life: In “Our Church is Apostolic” unit, we are exploring how our church is “apostolic” through scripture and the purpose of the Church’s teaching role through the Magisterium Health: We are learning about the importance of making healthy choices, factors that can affect our mental well being, and personal safety, and preventative strategies (e.g. body image, mental illness, eating disorders, harassment, coping strategies and where to get help). Phys-Ed: We are assessing our personal fitness level to help us plan, participate and learn about a variety of physical activities to improve our health (e.g. sending and receiving a pass in volleyball, handball, and other indoor active games). Science: We are investigating the properties and applications of pure substances and mixtures (e.g. How do we dispose harmful waste? What are the implications to our environment?) using scientific inquiry skills. History: We are exploring the transition from New France to British North America including factors that led to this change, the aftermath and how various groups were affected. Art: We are reviewing the elements design and applying them to create works of art that communicate an idea, or message. Have a Happy Thanksgiving Ms. Lemos
