MR105 – Keyboarding I Week 3 Seminar Nakisha Floyd, Instructor

Agenda Week Two Grading Week Three Learning Outcomes Active Exercises P re-Test, P ractice, P ost-Test Ergonomic tip…keyboard tray Business Letters Correspondence discussions Questions

Week Two Grading I am working diligently on Week Two grading. With the grading, I can see improvement with many from week to week. What do you think about your progress? How can I gain points?

Progress so far How are you progressing so far in this class? Please type “Happy”, “So-So” or “Unhappy” to indicate how you feel about your typing. Next, regardless of your answer, list your strength and weakness. Example: Strength: numbers Weakness: Chocolate…I mean keeping fingers on home row.

Timed Typings Problems When I see timed typing attempts that are not the best, I immediately look for: Incorrect text Incorrect lesson accessed in GDP Other possible reasons: Fatigue Rushing to get done on time Wanting to stay ahead

Gaining Points Two ways to gain points in this class… Seminar Participation Discussion Board Posts

Discussion Board Always post at least meet the minimum requirements: Initial post by Saturday at 11:59 pm. Two posts, on two separate days, posted to two different classmates by Tuesday at 11:59 pm. Responses have to help further the discussion.

Seminar To help earn the maximum points in Seminar, Option 1…comment, ask questions, answer questions. We are in seminar for at least one hour, usually much more. We have to continually comment, ask questions, and answer questions to keep the discussion going, and to help keep you engaged in the seminar. Remember, if you are experiencing severe interconnectivity issues, it is best to close out seminar and complete Option 2.

Week Three Learning Outcomes Demonstrate improved speed and accuracy while typing Correctly format a business letter in block style with standard punctuation Correctly format a business letter Correctly use Word’s envelope Correctly use Word’s attachment feature Correctly format a memo

Assignments for Grades Active Lessons Lesson 26, pp Lesson 27, pp Lesson 28, pp Lesson 29, pp Lesson 30, pp Points Timed Typing Lesson 30D Seminar - Business Letters / Correspondence

No Discussion Board This Week Focus on just your typing skills for the week! :o)

Ergonomics and keyboarding Let’s have a quick quiz… without looking at your text: 1. True or False: Straighten your fingers when reaching for the number keys. 2. True or False: You type the 9 key by using the same finger as the K key. 3. True or False: Move your hands to Row 3 on the keyboard when keying numbers. Please type your answers now.

Ergonomics and keyboarding Answers: 1. True or False: Straighten your fingers when reaching for the number keys. FALSE 2. True or False: You type the 9 key by using the same finger as the K key. FALSE 3. True or False: Move your hands to Row 3 on the keyboard when keying numbers. FALSE How did you do? Really, these seem like easy answers, but these questions represent typing techniques that slows a person down when typing, and can lead to errors.

Ergonomic tip: Need a keyboard tray If you cannot change the surface that your computer sets on…can’t purchase a new desk, or change surfaces, try a keyboard tray. How many have a keyboard tray? Do they seem to help?

Sustained Practice For example: Lesson 12 is a review of what you have learned so far…and includes speed sprints. Sprints are fun practices that helps you to pick up speed quickly. Another example: Lesson 12C: Each paragraph is more difficult than the one before. GDP will advance to the next paragraph when you have reached or exceeded the base speed on the previous paragraph. Can be frustrating, but great practice. Review, practice, and sprints!

Paced Practice In these lessons, you take a one minute timed writing to determine beginning speed. You then follow up with 2 minute timed writings, based on that speed. Focus of your typing should also be control…no more than 2 errors. Push moderately for speed.

Pacing Markers In the two minute timed writings: You will see 8 red boxes highlighting a letter indicating where you should be typing in 15- second intervals. You will try to "pace" yourself so that when you type for 15 seconds, you will reach the first red square you see on the timing copy. When each 15-second interval is up, the red square disappears. Try to slow down or speed up so that the squares disappear just when you reach them.

P re-test, P ractice, P ost-test These lessons are used to evaluated speed and accuracy in vertical reaches…numbers, letters on the third row, etc… Pre-test: evaluates speed and accuracy Practice: work on areas that need practice Post-test: check progress

Business Letters Business correspondence is crucial – so much so, that the National Commission On Writing estimates that American businesses spend $3.1 billion annually in training employees to write.

Business Letters This week, you will need to read: Lessons 26-30, pp Properly formatted business letters provide a positive reflection on a business and individuals. Effective communication can drive your company's reputation, increase productivity, develop clientele and allow the company to run more efficiently.

Virtual Field Trip Time :o)! How to Write a Professional Business Letter Hot to Write a Professional Business Letter Click the link above What are your thoughts? It is a good sample/example to give you an idea of what to expect.

Virtual Field Trip #2 Another thing that you are covering this week, is how to address an envelope. Here is a really good video that can help. It may seem elementary, but just as important. How to Address an Envelope Please share your thoughts :o)

Virtual Field Trip #3 Please complete the Activity Listed Interactive Activity - Business Letter - Block Style Just click and drag to the correct location. How did you do??

Correspondence Discussion Have you ever sent an that did not reach its recipient because of an address error? What type of error did you make? Was the important? What happened as a result? If you have not done this, what do you think could happen? Please answer in at least 2 COMPLETE sentences, and respond to at least 1 of your classmates.

Correspondence Meetings Think about a meeting you attended that was a failure. What could the leader have done better?

Correspondence Business Letters Have you ever written a business letter of any kind? If so, what was it about, and did anything happen as a result? If not, what type of things would a person write a business letter for? Please respond to at least two of your classmates.

Questions? Any questions? See you next week!
