How is MATTER defined?  Write down your definition of matter here:  Technical definition of matter:

Do you know the four states of matter? Solid s Liquids Gases Plasma

Solids  Solids hold their own shape.  Solids have an ordered molecular arrangement.  Solid particles continually vibrate back and forth.  Have lower E than their liquid and gas counterparts. Read more!

Liquids  Liquids take the shape of their container.  Liquid particles are disordered.  Liquid particles slide and glide (flow) over each other.  Have medium E compared to solids and gases. Read more!

Gases  Gases spread out to fill the entire space given.  Gases are extremely disordered.  Gas particles move very fast and at random. This is regarded as flow.  Have a lot of E! Read more!

Plasma  We will not be concerned about teaching this at Coe Lake, but you might be asked…  Lightning is a plasma.  Used in fluorescent light bulbs and neon lights.  Plasma is a lot like a gas, but the particles are electrically charged.  Have extremely high E levels. Read more!

Plasmas

Which state of matter has the highest amount of order?

Compressibility  What is compressibility?  What are some examples?  Which states of matter can be compressed?

Which states of matter have the ability to take the shape of their container?

have a medium density? have a very low density? have a high density? cannot be compressed? can be compressed? do not flow? can flow? have a fixed shape? have the shape of their container? have a fixed size? have the size of their container? Properties of S-L-G States

STATES of matter? What would it take for matter to move from one state to another?

Energy determines the state!

Adding Energy

Add or Subtract Energy... When energy is added, particles move faster! When energy is taken away, particles move slower!

What will happen? Why?

Solid + Energy = ?  When energy is added to solids, they become liquids!  Examples?  What happens when E is taken out of a liquid?

Liquid + Energy = ?  When energy is added to liquids, they become gases!  What examples can you think of?  What is the opposite state change called?

You need to know these terms…

Temperature & State Changes 0°C Any temperature

Changing States  There are several names for matter changing states:  State change  Phase change  Physical change
