STRUCTURE COMMITTEE CHS redesign

GENERAL RULES  Every meeting we need a “Recorder” someone to keep minutes  PAL (purpose, agenda, limit)  Consensus System (thumbs up, thumbs horizontal, thumbs down)  Expectations (sustainable/attainable goals)  Parking Lot (topics that must be revisited)  Plus/Delta

OVERVIEW  Vision – Where do we want to be?  Values – How will we operate?  Mission – What is our purpose?  SWOT Analysis – Where are we now?  Goals (Strategy) – How do we get there?  Action Plans – What do we do?

VISION STATEMENT Building a better tomorrow through our daily commitment to educational excellence.  Memorable, inspirational, and distinct.  Envisioning the possibilities and what we could become.

TEAM VALUES  As a team, we must come to a consensus on the values we will uphold throughout the redesign process in order to remain cognizant of each other’s values.  Respecting one-another’s values will remain important as decisions are made and discussions take place.  We have already prioritized what our top 7 values are through the survey on the wiki.

OUR TOP 7 ARE… 1Accountability 2Competence 3Courtesy 4Discipline 5Creativity 6Flexibility 7Knowledge

WE NEED 7 VOLUNTEERS…  Volunteers will be assigned a value and will write a value statement to be shared on the wiki by Friday.  Value statements should describe how the value will be displayed in action within our committee.

MISSION STATEMENT Usually a mission statement conveys:  Who we are  What we do, and  For whom we do it

SAMPLE MISSION STATEMENTS Mission Statement Community School recognizes that each child is an individual; that all children are creative; that all children need to succeed. Therefore, Community School respects the individual needs of children; fosters a caring and creative environment; and emphasizes the social, emotional, physical, intellectual development of each child. Mission Statement To Ensure the Safety and Security for Each Person in our Community Mission Statement Kitty Hawk Elementary School seeks to create a challenging learning environment that encourages high expectations for success through development-appropriate instruction that allows for individual differences and learning styles. Our school promotes a safe, orderly, caring, and supportive environment. Each student's self- esteem is fostered by positive relationships with students and staff. We strive to have our parents, teachers, and community members actively involved on our students' learning.

DIRECTIONS:  Count off by 6  Assign roles within the group (Leader, scribe and timekeeper)  Individually jot down ideas for a mission statement (5 minutes)  As a group discuss ideas and write a mission statement (15 minutes)  Share with whole group and vote Remember, usually a mission statement conveys:  Who we are  What we do, and  For whom we do it

NOMINAL VOTING TECHNIQUE  We will vote on each mission statement. You can give one mission statement a 5, one statement a 4, one statement a 3 and so on… Statement 54321totals

STRUCTURE COMMITTEE MISSION STATEMENT  The Structure Committee will develop a safe, consistent structured learning environment that is fair and equal to all students and staff.

SWOT ANALYSIS  Strengths - What the organization does well (internal look)  Weaknesses - What the organization does not do well (internal look)  Opportunities - What the organization can do to get better (internal/external look)  Threats - What will prevent the organization from succeeding (internal/external look)

FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS  You must figure out where you are in order to figure out where you want to go!  Consider your motivating and restraining factors.  What gaps are not being addressed? (Gaps exist when a driving force can not eliminate a restraining force)

TEAM CHARTER  Clear statement of the problem/job to be done (what is expected of us)  Where the "project" starts and ends  How our committee fits into the big picture  Set clear boundaries (what is inside and outside the committees jurisdiction)  Includes realistic goals/objectives

COMMITTEE GOALS  Goals must be SMART!  Specific  Measurable  Achievable  Relevant  Time-bounded

ACTION PLAN  Look at Action Plans form located on the wikispaces.  Purpose – a project management tool used to implement an idea or solution and provide a system to track progress.  Must include…  Goal Statement  Strategy/Activity to achieve goal  How it will be implemented  Time frame to complete activities  Evidence of success  Parties responsible

AND THE TWO ACADEMIES ARE …  Business/Technology and  Heath/Humanities
