Presentation transcript:

What does culture have to do with health care ? Culture is learned and it effects beliefs about; health, wellness, illness, treatments, nutrition, food preferences, religious practice, births, deaths … Folk medicine vs. western medicine – take a pill for everything

Concept Learning Outcomes: 1 Concept Learning Outcomes: 1. Discuss how culture and religious differences and preferences may affect an individual’s lifestyle and health care choices. 2.Describe how culture affects a patient’s health history Nutrition, diets, hygiene, communication styles, beliefs regarding wellness, illness, medical therapies, birth and death.

…and why should I care? As health care providers we first need to understand who we are; our beliefs, prejudices, bias, etc.

Male dominated culture … Send in female health care workers when possible and include husband or male figure What is the best way to handle this when possible?

What if your patient is from a different culture doesn’t speak much or make eye contact? We have a job to do so you have to get it done not call someone else.. Do you get another nurse who is of the same culture? Do you wait and come back later?

From the text book

Do you think the next slide gives us statistics on culture ?

Figure 6-1 (continued) Different cultural heritages are parts of the population in America. Source: Graph from U.S. Bureau of the Census. (2007). State & County QuickFacts. Do you agree or disagree? Whites within the state of NJ alone have different cultures. When I ask a student where they were born and they say Africa …I say Africa is a continent not a country. Within different regions of a country they often have cultural differences…. So what do you think?????

Diversity… What is your definition of diversity?

All kinds of families you need to think about your own views and be able to open your mind and your heart to give proper care

Transgender

Homeless population Among the most vulnerable clients In cities, 40% of the homeless population may consist of families with children Present unique and complex challenges – live in dangerous, unsanitary conditions, diets lacking in nutrients, few resources for coping with illness, have difficulty obtaining and storing medicines Page 403

Undocumented Immigrants Estimated that 11.6 million live in the U.S. Often do not seek healthcare until their problem becomes critical Often believe that accessing health care will result in legal consequences Fear deportation Page 404 – health care concerns …

“Normal” growth and development across the lifespan What is the difference between growth and development?

The terms growth and development both refer to dynamic processes. Growth refers to physical change and increase in size. Measured Quantitatively; height, weight, bone size, and dentition

The terms growth and development both refer to dynamic processes. Growth refers to physical change and increase in size. Measured Quantitatively; height, weight, bone size, and dentition

Behavioral aspect of growth; walk, talk, run Development is an increasing in complexity of function and skill progression, the capacity and skill of a person to adapt to the environment. Behavioral aspect of growth; walk, talk, run

Growth or Development? A child losing baby teeth as adult teeth emerge…. A one year old who is beginning to walk… A five year old who can not feed himself…. A twelve year old who can not spell his name.. A teenager rapidly getting taller… An 18 month old child beginning to say a few words…

Elderly Everything except BP decreases… still developing Want respect and dignity and independence. You need to be aware of the normal aging process and changes in our bodies
