Current trends in food service industry

Trend1  Changes in eating habits in America.  Money spent for home cooking is less.  Availability of take out meals.  People craving for high quality meals.  Money spent in food service industry continues to grow.

Trend 2  Growth of fast food chains.  Success of cell phones.  Increase in single parent household.  More women in the workplace.  Increase income of teenagers.  Convenience food which are easy to clean up, and no waste.  Grab and go meals

Trend 3  Healthy choices.  There is an increased public awareness of heart disease, cancer, and other illness.  Modification of diet.  Use of organic produce.  People are aware of calorie count, fat and sodium intake.

Trend 4 o Multicultural cuisine. o Fusion meals. o Increase in minority population. o Increased globalization of markets and online shopping. o A decade ago there were few Mexican restaurants. o Now we have Baja grill, chipotle, Ell polo loco. o African American, Thai, Italian, Indian, Chinese restaurants are increasing.

Trend 5  How safe is our food?  Increased public awareness for food safety.  There was a recent outbreak of Ecoli from ground beef at Jack in the box, and the use of genetically modified food.  Consumers are concerned about food safety.  There is increased need of maintenance of food safety throughout the cooking process.

Trend 6  Consumers are looking for healthy snacks.  Healthy snacks with flavor, and indulge in it.  Small plates, fewer calories, juices, smoothies.  Example, 330 calories.  McDonald _Chicken wrap. Dunkin donuts_ flat bread. Jamb Juice _ flat breads Taco bell_ fresco tacos.

Trend 8  LYFE_ Love your food everyday.  New concept by McDonalds. Roasted Brussels sprouts, Kale banana smoothie, There day meal is replaced by 5times a day. Q)What trend can you bring to the cafeteria for your school?
