DBCP 31 October 2015 Deployment Opportunities Deployment Opportunities Update for DBCP 31 JCOMMOPS

DBCP 31 October 2015 Information gathered by JCOMMOPS Research Ships -IRSO -UNOLS -GO-SHIP -… Commercial Ships -Hamburg Süd -CMA-CGM -SOT -… Sailing Ships -Racing (BWR, Volvo) -Leisure (Cornell, VSF) -Old Style (Bark Europa) -… Chartered Ships Cost-effective, integrated JCOMM operations, set-up through operator ProLarge

DBCP 31 October 2015 Cruise Registration at JCOMMOPS -Automated download of basic information from sources such as UNOLS (gridded) -Manual registration of detailed information (and updates) from individual operators, e.g. for GO-SHIP

DBCP 31 October 2015 Achievements in intersessional period Top-level agreement with Hamburg Süd: -All ships, all lines available, for all panels -Additional support on the ground through ship suppliers of the company -Successful test with GDP, at reduced efforts in terms of logistics (cost/time) -No follow-up requests yet, but planned

DBCP 31 October 2015 Achievements in intersessional period Top-level agreement with CMA-CGM: -Target zone: Off Somalia (requested by Luca) -Long-term operation in need of coordination between shipping company, ship owner, ship officer, instrument operator and PMO office -Established under the JCOMM-OPA umbrella, and successfully implemented with PMO office in Mombasa/Kenya -Further missions planned (including also Argo)

DBCP 31 October 2015 Achievements in intersessional period Ocean Racing: -Successful deployments of floats and drifters in the Barcelona World, and Volvo Ocean Races, have shown the feasibility off such operations in ship- and data sparse areas -The media cover such operations intensively -New partnership agreements, comprising in-kind AND financial support from this community, are under construction -Next Race: Vendée Globe (IMOCA)

DBCP 31 October 2015 Racing - visualized

DBCP 31 October 2015 Achievements in intersessional period Leisure Sailing / Rallies: -Successful deployments of floats and drifters in organized and repeat ocean-sailing events without competition, based on IOC partnership -Instrument operators can meet the ships -Ships agreed to change course and sail additional 3 days for smooth deployments in perfect positions and conditions -New operations are currently planned between Asia and South Africa

DBCP 31 October 2015 Rallies - visualized

DBCP 31 October 2015 Achievements in intersessional period Old style sailing: -Repeat access to traditional sailing routes around the world, which follow trade winds -Recurrent opportunities, which support ocean observing across all panels -Beyond hosting and deploying instruments, free hosting of scientific riders or meetings  Again free berth available on Bark Europa from Cape Town to Brest in spring 2016

DBCP 31 October 2015 Old Style Sailing - visualized

DBCP 31 October 2015 Prolarge: Charter Vessels As formerly presented, JCOMMOPS is ready to set-up cross-program deployment missions and other operations, in cooperation with the operator Prolarge – Cost-effective sailing vessels: E.g. Lady Amber is now also capable to deploy and recover larger instruments, such as wave gliders, and will establish a long term mission for SPURS-2 (10°N 125°W, ) – Innovative, economic, fast, and if necessary armed survey vessels (fuel): Test cruises now underway

DBCP 31 October 2015 Ocean Eagle 43 : Range 5000 kts Less than 2 tons of fuel / day Available for support missions for JCOMMOPS from 2016 or 2017 on

DBCP 31 October 2015 Northern Route 7340 M 20 days Direct Route 4932 M 14 days Central Route 8125 M 23 days Southern Route 7640 M 21 days Prolarge: OE43 Simulations

DBCP 31 October 2015 ROM PRICE 1- Time charter contract for dedicated mission : day rate depends on volume of charter mission per year and type of area. In low risk area : 2- Examples of opportunity mission: Direct Route is a transit between Cape Town and Banda Aceh High Risk Area : € /D Difficult navigation Area : € /D Distance Duratio n ∆t HRA or DNA ROM Price (€) Direct Route 4932 M 13,7 days 00,00 € North Route 7340 M 20,4 days +7 days12 days € South Route 7640 M 21,2 days +7,5 days 9 days € Central Route 8125 M 22,6 days +9 days €

DBCP 31 October 2015 JCOMMOPS/ProLarge Missions We propose missions through this consortium in order to -Exploit synergies, following the JCOMM spirit -Guarantee a minimum of requirements on low- cost vessels (e.g. technical check, crew training and insurance For Lady Amber, a MoU was established with owner, captain, ProLarge and JCOMMOPS in 2013, and presented as framework since DBCP29

DBCP 31 October 2015 JCOMMOPS/ProLarge Missions Based on a request from an Argo operator, a joint mission could be set up with DBCP in 2017: nautical miles through the Southern Pacific, possibly starting from Hawaii -Probably a sailing ship with 75 days at sea -From the Equator to 40°S latitude -125° to 170° West longitude -DBCP to consider deployment needs and financial contribution

DBCP 31 October 2015 Upcoming innovative Cruises -Kon-Tiki Expedition with various instruments onboard (including GDP drifters) -OceanoScientific Expedition with various instruments onboard (including Ifremer float)

DBCP 31 October 2015 What are your requirements?
