Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 The 8-Pack Project at NLCTA An overview of the status and schedule for the project. Modulator and klystrons startup in July, 2002 High power checkout in January, 2003 DLDS operation in July 2004 Phase 1 SLED layout

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 The 8-Pack Project Demonstrate full NLC RF power & stored energy, 1 st with SLED, Test DLDS components at full power prior to DLDS assembly Then with DLDS Deliver full NLC RF power to NLCTA accelerating structures Phase-1: 4-Pack –Assemble system with: 2 XP3 klystrons to power the SLED, additional XP3 klystron(s) as available A solid state modulator (from the ‘4-dog’) SLED system A simplified LLRF control system allowing SLED operation –Produce NLC spec. power: 600 MW 400 ns Benchmark as a power source for the NLC –Test DLDS components at full power before installing Phase-2: 8-pack –Assemble 8 (total) XP3 klystrons with a (new) solid state modulator and an NLC spec. LLRF control system –Attach DLDS system with two half arms reaching to two girders of high gradient accelerating structures in NLCTA (from FNAL).

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 Goals – Phase 1 Use multimoded SLED II pulse compression on 2 tubes to attain >600 MW, 400 ns cross potent) – meeting the NLC spec. Set up a station for high power tests of DLDS components & begin testing components Gain experience with 75 MW klystron operation Not to interfere with the High Gradient Structure Tests

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 Goals – Phase 2 Demonstrate DLDS pulse compression to attain NLC power specs. –500 MW, 396 ns girder) –Power NLCTA girders Test DLDS system and high gradient structures to full energy (200J – 400J) Investigate operational, stability, maintenance issues associated with DLDS

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 Modulator Solid State Modulator in the 4-dog Test Stand Move to NLCTA 5/28 Stand and tank being designed and built by LLNL

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 Klystrons Unit #2 under test by the SLAC klystron group. Schedule: Install #2: 7/19-7/25 Install #3: 8/21-8/27 XP3 PPM #2 75MW

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 Phase 1 schedule overview Held system design review 2/22 75% of individual systems completed design reviews Civil and infrastructure complete 6/5 Commission modulator at NLCTA 7/18 Klystron #2 power to loads 8/2 SLEDII system installation begins 10/1 Pump down SLEDII 1/22/03

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 Phase 2 schedule overview Begin DLDS design during FY’02 High-power test DLDS components April-October 2003 Remaining klystron parts fabricated in FY’03 Install remainder of klystrons January-February 2004 DLDS system with controls installed June 2004 DLDS testing begins July 2004

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 8-pack project spending needs in direct, FY’02 dollars Phase 1: 4-Pack and SLED Phase 2: 8-Pack and DLDS SystemFY’02FY’03FY’04 System Eng. & Admin.$510k $515k Infrastructure Modulator Klystrons RF distribution Controls & DAQ Total$4,205k$6,440k$3,440k In FY’02, $2.4M spent by NLC for R&D in klystrons, modulators, and SLEDII/DLDS component development - hardware used in 8-Pack Phase 1. In Phase 2 the 8-Pack project must pick this up and purchase remaining hardware, including 5 klystrons and DLDS system

Next Linear Collider 8-Pack Project D. Atkinson System Review, April 3 No contingency in plan, either cost or schedule In Phase 2, Project must purchase all remaining hardware Klystrons fabrication pushed out of ’02 by budget DLDS fabrication and testing Must compete for SLAC services with PEP-II, SPEAR 3, LCLS, & NLC structures development If we had more dollars, we could Outsource more fabrication work to secure schedule Accelerate parts for remaining klystron in FY’02 Enhance the diagnostics in the control system in FY’02 Currently in the process of resource loading the schedule Costs and tasks may shift when complete Issues and Concerns for the 8-Pack Project (Remember, this is an R&D project)
