Do these kind of “diets/weight loss products” encourage people to create an unhealthy relationship with food? What if losing weight starts to become an obsession?

Healthful ways to gain weight  Select food from the 5 major food groups that are higher in calories  Choose whole milk instead of low-fat or fat-free milk  Choose higher calorie, nutrient rich foods  Examples include nuts, dried fruits, cheese, and avocados

Healthy Weight Gain  Eat nutritious snacks  Enjoy healthful snacks more often to increase your daily calorie intake  Get regular physical activity  If you’re increasing your calorie intake to gain weight, don’t forget to exercise. Physical activity will ensure that most of the weight you gain is muscle rather than fat

Physical Activity  Physical activity can help you lose or maintain a healthy weight.  Added benefits:  Helps relieve stress  Promotes a normal appetite response  Increases self-esteem, which helps keep your plan on track  It helps you feel more energetic

Liquid Diets  Liquid diets replace all food intake with a special liquid formula  Lacks fiber and other nutrients  Leaves dieter fatigued

Fasting  Fasting is to abstain from eating  Deprives the body of needed nutrients and can result in dehydration  Some religions and cultural customs require people to fast for short periods of time.  This kind of short-term fasting is safe for most people

Diet Pills  Some diet pills and supplements claim to suppress your appetite so that you eat less.  Diet pills can be addictive  Serious side effects include racing heart and anxiety

Managing your weight  Target a healthy weight  Learn your ideal weight range from a health care professional  Set realistic goals  Eat a consistently healthful diet and exercise regularly  Personalize your plan  Incorporate foods you enjoy into your daily eating plan  Put your goals and plan in writing  Write down your goals and your plan  Evaluate your progress  Track your weight on a weekly basis

 Healthful Ways to Lose Weight

Choose foods low in calories  Look at food labels to determine what foods are low in calories VS

Eat 5 small meals instead of 3 large meals VS. Increases metabolism Balances blood sugar levels Encourages smaller stomach size

Eat breakfast everyday  provides energy and increases metabolism

Eat lots of fruits and Vegetables Low in calories High in vitamins and minerals

Grill and Bake Meats. Don’t fry! Choose lean meats (chicken, fish) instead of fatty meats (sausage, red meat) VS.

Limit the amount of sugar in your diet High sugar foods are not filling calories

Don’t drink your calories Drink water! If necessary, drink low calorie drinks such as skim milk or G2 VS.

Eat whole grains instead of refined grains More filling VS.

Encourage your parents to buy healthy food If it is not in the house, you won’t eat it. VS.

Plan ahead and prepare meals/snacks in advance Keep cut up veggies and fruit in the fridge. Cook more so that there are leftovers for a snack the next day. Pack a lunch the night before. Pack an extra snack.

Eat at home instead of restaurants At home, you can control the calories in your food. At restaurants, you lose control over what goes in your food. Restaurant food is typically large portions and high in calories. VS.

Slow down when you eat It takes 20 minutes for your brain to process that you are eating Don’t eat in front of TV! Often people eat faster and more calories. VS.

Be more physically active

Exercise daily Increases metabolism Goal: at least 30 minutes Choose an activity that you will enjoy. Get a workout partner.

Lift weights Increases metabolism Builds muscle tissue (less fat mass) Increases self-esteem

Eating Disorders  Eating disorders- extreme, harmful eating behaviors that can cause serious illness or even death  Classified as mental illnesses  Linked to depression, low self-esteem, or troubled personal relationships  Social and cultural forces that emphasize physical appearance can also play a role

Anorexia Nervosa 

Anorexia Nervosa  An eating disorder in which an irrational fear of weight gain leads people to starve themselves  Mainly affects girls and younger women  See themselves unrealistically overweight even when their dangerously thin

People with Anorexia  Avoid food and meals  Eat only a few kinds of food in small amounts  Weigh or count calories in everything they eat  Exercise excessively  Weigh themselves repeatedly

Health Consequences  Malnutrition and starvation  Bones become brittle  Body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure drop, and there may be a reduction in organ size  Can lead to heart problems and sudden cardiac death

Bulimia Nervosa 

Bulimia Nervosa  An eating disorder that involves cycles of overeating and purging, or attempts to rid the body of food  Regularly go on binges, eating a huge amount of food in a single sitting.  During binge they may feel out of control, often gulping down food too fast to taste it  After the binge they purge, forcing themselves to vomit or take laxatives

Bulimia  Instead of purging, some people with bulimia may fast or exercise frantically after a binge  Typically are in a normal weight range unlike anorexic people  Share the same fear of weight gain and dissatisfaction with their bodies

Health Consequences  Dehydration  Sore and inflamed throat  Swollen glands  Teeth may become damaged due to exposure to stomach acid  May damage stomach, intestines, or kidneys  Can lead to irregular heart rhythms, heart failure and death in severe cases

Binge Eating 

Binge Eating Disorder  People overeat compulsively  Eat large amounts of food for a short period of time  More commons in males  Person may feel guilty and disgusted about his or her behavior, but feels powerless to stop it

Seeking Help  Eating disorders are serious and dangerous  People with these disorders need help to overcome them  Medical help may involve counseling, nutritional guidance, a doctor’s care, and in extreme case, a hospital stay

Seeking Help  For anorexia nervosa, the goal of treatment is to restore the patients body weight to a healthy level. Family members and friends can help by creating a supportive environment and helping the patient learn to eat normally again

Seeking Help  Key to treating bulimia nervosa is to break the cycle of binging and purging. Behavioral therapy can sometimes help with the goal. After that, psychotherapy can address the emotional problems that led to the eating disorder.  Similar treatments are used for binge eating disorders

Seeking Help  People with eating disorders often cannot admit that they have a problem.  Family members and friends can help them recognize they have a problem and seek treatment  Some patients require long term care to recover  Support groups can help with this process  First step is to talk to a trusted adult, such as parent, counselor, or school nurse if you feel you know someone who suffers from a eating disorder
