Safety in Criminal Justice I In this class we will deal with various situations that could be UNSAFE. In your groups, you will discuss safety issues in one of five areas: – Clean Classrooms and Table Space – Following Instructor’s Directions – Dealing with Emergency Situations (i.e. fire drill, tornado drill, lockdown, etc.) – Equipment and Labs – Illegal or Non-Compliant Items in the Class (i.e. drugs or weapons) GROUP DIRECTIONS For your topic: – 3 minutes: SILENTLY list up to 5 UNSAFE situations for your topic in your composition notebook. – 5 minutes: Discuss your situations with your team and choose UNSAFE situations. – 10 minutes: From your discussion, list the top UNSAFE situations that may occur in OUR classroom. Leaving the Classroom You will be permitted to leave the classroom twice a semester. – To leave the room, 1.Raise your hand to ask. 2.Write the date. 3.Write your name. 4.Write the time that you are leaving the room. 5.Write your destination. 6.Write the time you return to the room. iPad Usage We will use iPads often in class. – When it is time to get iPads, TIMEKEEPERS will come get iPads for the entire table. TIMEKEEPERS will sign each iPad out. TIMEKEEPERS will return/sign each iPad back in at the end of class. Each table will be assigned certain iPads to use.

Heading Assignments or Notes Anytime you are writing out an assignment in your composition notebook or on notebook paper, you will: Head your paper in MLA format – MLA (Modern Language Association) style is most commonly used to write papers and cite sources within the liberal arts and humanities. APA (American Psychological Association) style is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. On the first page of your book, head your paper in MLA format: (start on the left side, first blue line, inside the red margin) – First and Last Name – Teacher Name – Course Name and Block – Date (Day Month Year) no commas, no abbreviations – Title of Assignment (Center)-Write your table role as the title.

Taking Notes in Class You should take notes daily on information that will help you to be successful! – Always date your notes (no format needed here) – Write your notes in your composition notebook. – Write them in an organized manner. – Refer to them daily when you come to class.

Monitoring Standards For each Summative Assessment, you will need to keep track of your progress. – Your grades for Criminal Justice are reported to the state. When you take a test, complete a project, or perform a task that is assessing a standard: 1.Write your score in your Standards Form inside of your Composition Notebook. 2.Write the Re-take score. 3.Follow step 2 until mastery of the standard.
