Objectives I will be able to: – Identify behaviors and actions that are not safe in the classroom or during a lab. – Read and analyze the Criminal Justice I standards. – Demonstrate an understanding of the Basic Classroom Etiquette Procedures by performing them in class. – Demonstrate an understanding of the Working in the Classroom Procedures. – Read and analyze the proposed syllabus by leaving remarks on a post-it note for review.

Safety in Criminal Justice I In this class we will deal with various situations that could be UNSAFE. In your groups, you will discuss safety issues in one of five areas: – Clean Classrooms and Table Space – Following Instructor’s Directions – Dealing with Emergency Situations (i.e. fire drill, tornado drill, lockdown, etc.) – Equipment and Labs – Illegal or Non-Compliant Items in the Class (i.e. drugs or weapons) GROUP DIRECTIONS For your topic: – 3 minutes: SILENTLY list up to 5 UNSAFE situations for your topic in your composition notebook. – 5 minutes: Discuss your situations with your team and choose UNSAFE situations. – 10 minutes: From your discussion, list the top UNSAFE situations that may occur in OUR classroom. Write them on a large Post-It note from the back of the room – 7 minutes: Presenters will present the situations the group comes up with.

Electronic Usage There is no PERSONAL electronic use in this classroom. – If your phone is SEEN at any point: 1.Taken until the end of the period. 2.Taken until the end of the school day. 3.Taken to the office for your parent to pick it up. 4.Referrals for failure to obey after 3 infractions.

Silent Spot/High Five To get your attention, I will 1.Move to the center of the room. 2.Raise my hand to show five fingers: » Eyes on the speaker. » Ears listening. » Mouths quiet. » Body Still. » Brain focused on the task at hand.

Tardiness to Class When coming to class tardy, 1.Leave your note in the basket on my desk. 2.Have a seat at your table. 3.Wait for a break and your secretary/leader will inform you of what you have missed.

Leaving the Classroom You will be permitted to leave the classroom twice a semester. – To leave the room, 1.Raise your hand to ask. 2.Write the date. 3.Write your name. 4.Write the time that you are leaving the room. 5.Write your destination. 6.Write the time you return to the room. Please be advised that you will not be permitted to leave the first 20 minutes of class nor the last 20 minutes of class.

Dismissal from Class You will not leave the class until I dismiss you. – Before I will dismiss you, – All baskets should be organized and full. – All trash should be removed from around your table. – All notebooks should be replaced. – All work/supplies for the day should be returned to their appropriate places.

iPad Usage We will use iPads often in class. – When it is time to get iPads, TIMEKEEPERS will come get iPads for the entire table. TIMEKEEPERS will sign each iPad out. TIMEKEEPERS will return/sign each iPad back in at the end of class. Each table will be assigned certain iPads to use.

Working in the Classroom Procedures Heading Your Papers Taking Notes in Class Monitoring Standards Turning-In Assignments Make-Up Assignments and Tests

Heading Assignments or Notes Anytime you are writing out an assignment in your composition notebook or on notebook paper, you will: Head your paper in MLA format – MLA (Modern Language Association) style is most commonly used to write papers and cite sources within the liberal arts and humanities. APA (American Psychological Association) style is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. On the first page of your book, head your paper in MLA format: (start on the left side, first blue line, inside the red margin) – First and Last Name – Teacher Name – Course Name and Block – Date (Day Month Year) no commas, no abbreviations – Title of Assignment (Center)-Write your table role as the title.

Taking Notes in Class You should take notes daily on information that will help you to be successful! – Always date your notes (no format needed here) – Write your notes in your composition notebook. – Write them in an organized manner. – Refer to them daily when you come to class.

Monitoring Standards For each Summative Assessment, you will need to keep track of your progress. – Your grades for Criminal Justice are reported to the state. When you take a test, complete a project, or perform a task that is assessing a standard: 1.Write your score in your Standards Form inside of your Composition Notebook. 2.Write the Re-take score. 3.Follow step 2 until mastery of the standard.

Turning In Assignments There will be 3 ways to turn in assignments: 1.In class work The Presenter will collect it and place it in the black tray in the back of the room 2.Homework You will the work to me from your ACCEPTABLE GMAIL account to my MNPS account. 3.Today’s Meet/other internet platforms You will respond via Today’s Meet (or alternative) from your iPad or from home.

Make-Up Assignments and Tests If you are absent from class (or late), you will need to: – Get your missing work from the secretary/leader – See me if needed.
