Lesson Topic: One-Step Equations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division) Lesson Objective: I can…  Solve one-step equations by relating an equation to a diagram.  Check to determine if solutions make equations true.

Example 1 Calculate the solution: a + 2 = 8  First, we will do it with tape diagrams.  Then, we will do it algebraically to show what happened when we made the tape diagrams.  Last, we will check our answer using substitution and the identity property.

Example 2 Calculate the solution: D - 5 = 7  First, we will do it with tape diagrams.  Then, we will do it algebraically.  Last, we will check our answer using substitution and the identity property.

Example 3 Identify the mistake in the problem below. Then, correct the mistake: H + 10 = 25 H = H = 35

Example 4 Solve: 3z = 9  First, we will do it with tape diagrams.  Then, we will do it algebraically.  Last, we will check our answer by substituting the value of z into the original equation.
