Three Branches of Government

What are the Three Branches? Executive Branch Legislative Branch Judicial Branch

Separation of Powers Breaks government responsibilities into three specific branches. Each branch has its own role to play. Checks and Balances – Makes sure that one branch does not have more power over the other two! Why?

Legislative Branch Has power to make laws. Is made up of Congress ▫Congress is the Senate (100) and the House of Representatives (435).

Executive Branch Carries out the Laws. Made up of … ▫The President  Can Veto Bills passed by Congress! ▫The Vice-President ▫The Cabinet  Nominated by the president and must be approved by 51 Senators.

Judicial Branch The Supreme Court ▫9 Justices. Appointed by the President and serve life terms. ▫Decides whether or not laws are constitutional.
