CRITICAL THINKING Critical thinking is one aspect of thought. When you think critically you: evaluate all the information you have available decide what is true or not true make your own decisions about what you believe In order to think critically, you must have the ability to use logic and reason. You must also be able to evaluate whether the information you receive is based on fact or opinion.

CRITICAL THINKING (Cont…) Critical thinking is an important part of being a successful student. Learning how to use logic and reason will give you the ability to evaluate information effectively, make decisions on where you stand on important issues, and help you support your own arguments. This will become increasingly important during seminars, discussion boards, project assignments, and final projects.

Critical Thinking and Reading Comprehension  Reading is one of the most important tasks college students perform on a regular basis.  Reading for content can sometimes be challenging, especially after a long day at work or if there is a lack of interest in the subject material.  Applying the critical thinking skills learned so far in this course can help to improve reading comprehension.  Critical thinking requires the reader to identify, analyze, assess, and evaluate information in an attempt to make an informed decision about what he/she believes to be important.  Having a solid understanding of the important parts of a text will ensure you are getting the most out of your reading and will lead to more effective note-taking.

Use a systematic reading method, such as SQ3R! Review the following website to understand this method:

SQ4R? Add another R: 1. Read 2. Recite 3. Review And now….. 4. Relate You are more likely to retain information if you can relate the materials to something you already know. You can relate the material to an experience, story, TV show or movie, or book. Be creative!

Seminar Topics– Unit 5 Qst 1. Why is important to use a reading method such as SQ4R? Please answer this question using a full sentence, capitalization, good spelling, and complete with punctuation !

Seminar – Unit 5(cont..) QST 2. What is active reading? Please answer this question using a full sentence, capitalization, good spelling, and complete with punctuation !

Read Actively  Applying critical thinking skills can help to improve reading comprehension by enabling the reader to take a more active role in the reading process.  An active reader fully involves himself or herself in the reading process, which facilitates greater understanding of the subject matter.

Seminar – Unit 5(cont..) QST 3. How can you make your reading more active? Please answer this question using a full sentence, capitalization, good spelling, and complete with punctuation !

Read Actively The opposite of an active reader is a passive reader who reads the words on the page, but takes no positive action to ensure the material is being understood or retained.

Note Taking Methods How can you match note taking methods with your learning styles? (i.e. visual learners can use color and drawing)

Unit 5 Mini Project Creating a Screen Shot You will use screen shots in other courses to show that you have completed an assignment. For example, you may have to complete an assignment from the CD that comes with your textbook. In order for you instructor to know you have done the assignment, you will take a screen shot, transfer it to MS Word, and then upload it into the drop box. For this course, you will to use this feature for the project in this unit.
