China Makes a Move  The Republic of China announced that the republic's army's duty was to liberate Tibet.  In October of 1950, 40,000 Chinese soldiers invaded Tibet.  Tenzin Gyratso took power as the 14th Dalai Lama at the age of guides/456900/456954/html/nn1page1.s tm

The 17-Point Agreement  In 1951 the 17-Point agreement was created by the Republic of China.  The agreement stated, "This affirmed Chinese sovereignity over Tibet and stated that China would not "alter the existing political system in Tibet" and that "in matters relating to various reforms in Tibet there would be no compulsion on the part of the central authorities". " -

China Reacts to Resistance  In 1959, a resistance movement started to grow in Lhasa and in Tibet.  The Republic of China reacted aggressively to the movement.  Out of fear that the Dalai Lama would be kidnapped, about 300,000 Tibetans gathered around the capitol to protect their Dalai Lama. Soon later, he fled the country.

Genocide Begins  Genocide began in the year Mao made an effort to eliminate Tibetans for his Communist society.  In between 1960 and 1962, hundred of thousand of Tibetan commoners and monks were exterminated by Chinese troops.  Along with the Tibetan people, thousands of monasteries were burned and destroyed.  However, Tibetans were not the only targets of Mao's. chments/f10/132067d chinese- communist-genocide-against-tibetan-people- happening-today-your-r-tibet3.jpg

The 1980s  In the late 1980s China's security chief, Qiao Shi, visited Tibet and vowed to "adopt a policy of merciless repression". -  In 1987 on the 30th anniversary of the National Uprising, Tibetans gathered in the streets of Tibet. Abduction  In 1995, The 11th Panchen Lama, six-year-old Choekyi Nyima, was taken hostage by the Republic of China.  That same year, the Republic of China established a campaign to re-educate the Tibetan population.  The genocide of the people continues even to this very day.

Self-Immolation  In 2011 the first occurrence of self-immolation took place in Tibet.  A Tibetan monk, by the name of Kirti Monastery, lit himself on fire in the streets of Ngabal.  Since then there has been over 100 confirmed cases of this sort of protesting in Tibet.  - Tibetan monk protesting using self- immolation

On-Going Effects  Over a million Tibetans have died over the years since the genocide began, and this number continues to grow as more work, labor, and concentration camps are established for Tibetan and political enemies.  Over 70% of the inmates total in the camps and in prisons die.

On-Going Effects in Nature  Economic effects since the rule of the Republic of China took a turn for the worst. The air quality in the region has suffered greatly due to pollution and other means.  Nature is taking a great blow as well. Deforestation and extermination of animals have left this once beautiful and lively country to rot.  Large animals were vastly found and were in good populations and most are now extinct or severely endangered.
