More Changing Expectations

I walked away wondering…

Brene Brown

Sorry First Draft We see things as we are Not as they are

Sometimes it's silly… But we accept it as true And act on it as though it were And that's…dangerous

We expect What we've experienced

Church organ…

We expect What we've experienced

It's time to expect more We expect What we've experienced

Jesus…saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him

180 Degrees Different Jesus chose A Tax Collector

You are chosen That's what adoption is…

And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples

And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

We expect What we've experienced "God doesn't accept Tax collectors and sinners He accepts…us!"

"Why would he be doing this? Maybe he's not from God… Maybe he's a false teacher!"

But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick

There are none so sick As those who think they are Well enough to point out Everyone else's sin

If I get so right with God That it causes me to Look down on others I've missed God

Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners”

For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings - Hosea 6:6 Doing for God can eclipse Knowing God

Only when the things I do out of Love for God lead me to Love people more Is it God that I'm serving

Religious Sacrifice= What I do for God Mercy= What God does through me For people made in his image

Look at all I'm doing!

Look at all I'm doing! If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal

And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing

If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing - 1 Cor. 13:1-3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing - 1 Cor. 13:1-3

I desire mercy, and not sacrifice Nothing I do matters Unless I love people Made in God's image

And who is my neighbor?

We expect What we've experienced And God has no room In that box

Why does he hang With tax collectors and sinners? Wrong question "Why don't you love people Who are made in God's image?"

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

We've experienced fasting We expect fasting Why you not fasting?

And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?...

The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast

Because this is a new move of God in your midst Don't miss it!

Messiah is here The hope and dream of nations The Consolation of Israel

Messiah is here The hope and dream of nations The Consolation of Israel And you're worried about Food customs?

Things are changing quicker Than we ever imagined

Things are changing quicker Than we ever imagined And you're worried about Worship style & jeans 10 Commandment Statues?

We expect What we've experienced And God has no room In that box

…to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace - Romans 8:6

No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made

This is…NEW I'm not here to patch the old But to replace it

Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed

But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved” - Matt. 9:9-17

Wineskin Theologically: Old Covenant Wineskin Practically: What I'm used to

God is always doing a New thing Religious people are always Baptizing old things as sacred And unchangeable

Peter: Still eating Kosher Jews: God doesn't accept Gentiles Judaizers: Well, they gotta get Circumcised first

When we expect What we've always experienced We miss what God wants to do In our lives today

Forms are changeable Functions are not

When we expect What we've always experienced We miss what God wants to do In our lives today

Relationally… Brene Brown

What if it could be different?

Sorry First Draft

It's time to expect more We expect What we've experienced

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…

Arguments= logismos- "emphasizes reaching a personal opinion, i.e. what comes out of a personal reckoning"

Lofty opinion= hupsoma- Opinion raised "My opinion has become my Truth by which I view life"

Destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God And take every thought captive to obey Christ…

Thought= noema- personal verdict - 2 Cor. 10:3-5

How? For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds

If you know Jesus, The power is in you Right now To put these things to death

Stay connected: - Scripture and Prayer - Kill anything that interferes with my knowing (walking with) Jesus

Focus on Christ …to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace - Romans 8:6

Help me to see them As you see them And to love them as I already love myself (Because it's not about me)

Sorry First Draft We expect What we've experienced Except…

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come 2 Cor. 5:17

If you expect What you've experienced You've forgotten that You're not who you were

From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh- vs. 16 "Enemy to marginalize" "Friend to get on my side"

About you? Let it go if at all possible To you? Or you think so…? "Let's talk…"

We expect…New Community And encourage toward it Spur one another on to love and good deeds

Does what I expect Reflect the New that Christ Is doing in my life? In my Faith Community?

Does what I expect Reflect the New that Christ Longs to do in my world Through my life?

SFD I don't spend much time going Over those things anymore End of the day- do what I should

As a church We hold the purpose tightly And hold lightly to the forms
