Billy is so excited the fair is in town! He enjoys the rides and the food there. His mother gives him thirty dollars for tickets and food. He also has around ten bucks (give or take) from his lawn service. He goes to his dad saying, “Can I please have ten bucks? Please dad! Please! Games are so expensive but so much fun!” After collecting all his money he rushes out the door.

Billy gets to the fair and without thinking, he starts handing out money. He bought twenty tickets, he bought a hot dog, he bought cotton candy, he bought a drink, he gave a friend a couple dollars…. Billy is having the best time!

Billy cannot win any prizes, so he decides to buy something. He really wants a basketball set. It is $12.00 for the set. But, he also wants to ride the roller coaster and play the milk jug game before he goes home. This is the last basketball set so he needs to make a decision now on if he can buy it.

So, Billy sits down for minute to think. He knew he had forty dollars from his parents and no more than ten from his job. He knew he bought twenty tickets at $.99 a piece so he is rounding it to $1.00 a ticket. He bought a hot dog for $2.00, cotton candy for $1.50, and a drink for $1.50. He gave his friend $2.00. It costs $12.00 for the basketball set so how many tickets can he buy? He thinks…….. And thinks……… He’s got it! $ $ $ $ $ $ $1.00 t ≤ $50.00 $ $1.00 t ≤ $50.00 $1.00 t ≤ $ $39.00 $1.00 t ≤ $11.00 t ≤ 11 Billy knows that he needs four tickets to ride the rollercoaster and three to play the milk jug game. So, he has enough for everything. He also knows that leaves him $4.00 …. As a reward for thinking so hard, he buys some nachos!!

Billy was so excited that the next day he went to school and told his math teacher that he used……what was it…….the money formula….no…..the buying formula….no……… ≤ ≥

Oh, what was it…..snapping his finger…..tapping his head…..he looked at his teacher and said, “ You know the thing with the weird symbol that you always said we would use one day!” She pointed to the board and it said …….
