Most children and young people will, at some time, act in a way that is inappropriate. Sometimes the behaviour is challenging e.g. a child who tears the pages out of a book. Other behaviour might be better described as creating a difficult situation.

Label the behaviour From the outset, it is important to label the behaviour and not the child. A child may do something naughty, but this does not mean that they are a naughty child. Telling a child that they are naughty will give them something to live up to!

Consider whether the child lacks the skills to manage their feelings. Is their behaviour the result of frustration, anger, fear or sorrow and they simply do not know how else to deal with it?

Consider whether this behaviour is new in this situation. Has the child coped with a similar situation in the past? If so, what might be different this time?

Consider whether the child needs support to develop the skills necessary to manage their behaviour. Is the support consistent from parents, family, practitioners, etc?

Activity Think about an occasion when a child or young person in your care has shown inappropriate behaviour. Without breaking confidentiality, consider the questions on the previous slides: What? Where? How? Why? Who? and note down how you might be able to deal with a similar event in the future.
