National Board Certification fosters quality teaching and student learning “The evidence is clear that National Board Certification distinguishes more effective teachers…with respect to student achievement.” Congressionally-mandated report National Research Council of the National Academies June 2008 National Board for Professional Teaching Standards 2

It’s about the Five Core Propositions 3 Are committed to students and their learning. Know the subjects they teach and how to teach them to students. Are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. Think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. Are members of learning communities. Accomplished teachers …

Eligibility National Board for Professional Teaching Standards 4  At least three years experience as a pre- K-12 classroom teacher or school counselor in a public or private school  A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution  A valid teaching license or a license to practice as a school counselor

Four Portfolio Entries Demonstrate accomplished teaching Include videos of large- and small-group classroom practice Require student work samples Document continuous learning, leadership, and collaboration Six Assessment Center Exercises Demonstrate accomplished proficiency with subject matter Are delivered at a computer-based testing center Are timed, with open-response prompts Six Assessment Center Exercises Four Portfolio Entries

No more Take One!  Take One! Has been discontinued. Take One! was designed to break the process into smaller chunks. With the revised National Board certification process, all candidates will have this option. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards7

The Design of the Revised Process  Revised National Board Certification will be comprised of 4 components: 8 Component 1 (C1) Revised Assessment Center Component 2 (C2) Revised Student Work Portfolio Component 3 (C3) Revised Video Portfolio Component 4 (C4) Revised Impact and Accomplish ments Portfolio

Component 2 (Student work) You provide evidence of your ability to plan, implement, and assess sequenced instruction by providing examples of responses to assessments from two of your students in the same class, and of your ability to reflect on your teaching practice. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards11

For this entry, you must submit the following:  Assessment materials (2 assessments, 7 pp. max, combined) are samples from (or descriptions of) two assessments, administered during the featured instructional sequence and samples from (or descriptions of) two students’ responses to these assessments. The two students you feature Your Written Commentary (15 pp. max) that provides an analysis of and reflection on an instructional sequence. The Written Commentary should address your goals for instructional sequence, your planning and implementation of the instruction, and your assessment of the 2 students. Lower fee, Pay as you go and feedback after each submission  Lower fee: $1900 ( approximately $475 per component)  Candidates pay for each component as they complete it.  Candidates receive feedback on each component after completion. Important Details -Download standards for free -May take 1(or more)components per year. -Must attempt each of the 4 components within a 3-year period -Two retake opportunities after 1 st attempt (retake fees apply) National Board for Professional Teaching Standards15

 Candidates will be able to choose which available components they take each year of the process  Note: Due to the ongoing revision, The World Language (WL) assessment center will be delayed until but the student work entry will be available in  * 3 year cycle for WL candidates National Board for Professional Teaching Standards16

Financial Support  WI will reimburse up to $2,000 of out of pocket expenses ( save receipts)  9 year stipend of $2,500. ( $5,000 high needs schools) 17

What was the biggest obstacle to completing this goal?  “TIME!”  “Not having a rubric to help understand the expectations better was difficult.”  “Writing the portfolio entries and videotaping”  “Putting it all together”

How has this process impacted your teaching?  “ I’m constantly focused on what’s important when I’m learning or teaching.”  “Because of this experience, I have the enthusiasm of a new teacher, with the experience of an old one !!”  There is not a day that goes by that I don't reflect on my teaching and the impact it has had on the students.

How has this process impacted your teaching?  “I am more reflective and purposeful in my teaching.  “This process has helped me keep focused on student learning.”  “I think more about what I do and why.”  I know that it has made me much more creative in my lessons. I think about everything I do.”
