What is the vascular system? System of tubes used to transport substances throughout the plant Most plants have a vascular system Allows a plant to grow large Two types: Phloem (pronounced “flome”) Xylem (pronounced “zylum”)

Two types of vascular tissue Phloem Carries food Moves food from the top of the plant to the bottom Does this because food is made in the leaves and usually stored in the roots Xylem Carries water Moves water from the bottom of the plant to the top Does this because water is brought in through the roots and used by the leaves to make food
