Scale & Proportion

1.Scale Definition: (write this down) The size of an object, i.e. smaller than actual size, larger than actual size, or actual size.

In Math Scale is a ratio like 2:1 or half scale

TCAP Practice Question 1.What size is the model car? 2.Show the ratio of a 4 inch model car to a 4 foot model car. (#2 on sheet)

In geography Scales are found on maps

In Architecture Scales are used to draw house plans

3.Name 2 examples of scaled drawings. (#3 on sheet)

In Art a grid is used to enlarge an image 200% or 1:2 1” Grid 2” Grid

4.Proportion Definition: (write this down) The relationship in size of one object to another.

Proportion If you've ever walked into a room and felt immediately uncomfortable, it's probably because something was out of proportion. Often when rooms aren't designed right, the effect is a kind of discomfort that you can't put your finger on.

5.How can we use proportion in our surroundings? How we use proportion in Art?

Sometimes artists chose to distort or exaggerate the proportions of the subjects involved. Fernando Botero, A Family In this case the artist chose to use these "puffed up forms" to exaggerate the size of the people. By showing the figures larger than life size, he is attempting to celebrate the life within, and perhaps to mock their role in the world.

How is this artist, John Zacchea, showing correct proportion in Wine Bottle and Cheese? When comparing the size of the objects in this composition, you see that they are not too large or too small for each other.

6.What’s the difference between scale and proportion? (Hint: It is a simple ratio.)

Finish questions 7 – 10 and turn your worksheet in.

Let’s practice using a map scale

Turn your map in to me as you leave today.
