AIM This study aims to measure empathy using the validated Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) measure between the patient and physiotherapist in a large teaching hospital. CONCLUSION The CARE measure is a simple tool to use and is a good measure of patient satisfaction. The scores enable us to understand patients perception of physiotherapy and to highlight our strengths and areas for improvement. RESULTS Outpatients Average Score Compared to all Physiotherapists The picture above shows how often the Physiotherapists were rated in each of the five classes for each CARE measure. The average rating for each measure is shown as the red line. The average Outpatient CARE Score was The average for the physiotherapy profession is Inpatient Average Score Compared to all Physiotherapists The average inpatient CARE score was The average for Physiotherapy profession is The lower score could be perhaps explained as inpatient treatments may be briefer, and are only one of multiple health professionals caring for the patient. INTRODUCTION Clinical encounters between patients and health care professionals are the core activity of medical care. Increasing attention is being paid to patients' views on care and the consultation, and to developing a more holistic, patient- centred approach. Empathy is considered to be a basic component of all therapeutic relationships and a key factor in patient's perceptions of quality of care. A STUDY TO MEASURE EMPATHY DURING A CONSULTATION BETWEEN A PHYSIOTHERAPIST AND A PATIENT IN THE HOSPITAL SETTING. METHODS 100 Subjects were randomly recruited from the outpatient physiotherapy department and 100 subjects receiving physiotherapy were recruited from the inpatient setting. All subjects in the study were in receipt of an individualised physiotherapy treatment as per usual care. Ethical Committee approval for the study was obtained from SJH/AMNCH Research Ethics Committee. The Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) Measure ( questionnaire was used. The CARE Measure is a quick (only 10 questions), patient- completed questionnaire. It measures empathy in the context of the therapeutic relationship during a one-on-one consultation between a clinician and a patient. Originally developed and rigorously tested for use by GPs, it has since been successfully used by other medical staff, allied health professionals (AHPs) and nurses. The researcher was not present while the patient completed the questionnaire to avoid bias and questionnaires were anonymous. All data was entered into the CARE website which calculated the results and how it relates to peers.
