Homework- how did you get on? Note- counter arguments have their own indicator words. Usually things like – However Although Despite this On the other hand Contrary to this But…

Argument Chess - yes it is a thing! 1.Pick a topic and write a short argument with at least two developed reasons (evidence and examples) in support of your conclusion. 2.Swap with someone else and list as many objections as you can think of to their argument then swap back. 3.Provide a brief response to each of your partner’s objections to your own argument. 4.Now write a more complex argument which includes both some of the objections made to your original argument together with your responses. Share with the class

Some suggested topics for an argument Girls are brighter than boys. Reality TV shows do more harm than good. Britain should reduce the voting age to sixteen. The school leaving age should be lowered to fourteen. Britain is not a good place to live.

Develop Your Own Argument -Raising the Drinking Age-

Teenage drunkenness costs the wider community a lot of money. This is firstly because of the cost to the NHS for emergency callouts and secondly because of the cost to the police in having to respond to youth crime and anti-social behaviour. These costs can be avoided by raising the buying age to 21. Therefore we should raise the age for buying alcohol in order to save this money. 1)Carefully read the passage in the box below:  “Mark up” the passage by circling indicator words, putting brackets around reasons (and developed reasons e.g. evidence or examples) and underlining conclusions.  Provide an argument map for the passage in the box below. ( ) ( ) _______________________________ _________________________ ( ) Note - developed reasons are known as either: Ex- example to support the reason Ev- evidence to support the reason R1 (potentially a IC) Ex1 Ex2 C + R2 ( )

2) Here is a list of claims some of which can be used to support raising the age limit to 21 and some of which can be used to oppose this: a)Statistics show alcohol is related to crime therefore young crime rates will be reduced b)18 year olds have been able to drink for years. It would be unfair to change this now. c)Will affect those over 18s social life d)Over 18s can already vote, drive … e)Young drink driving will be reduced. f)You are already classed as responsible and adult at 18. g)You could have a family of your own at 18. h)Reduce accident and emergency call outs by raising the age. i)It isn’t fair on those 18+ that drink responsibly. j)Reduces the number of young people suffering liver failure and other health problems. Put a tick next to those claims which could be used to support raising the drinking limit. Put a cross next to those claims which could be used to oppose raising the drinking limit.

3) Write a brief argument of your own against raising the drinking age. Your argument should include: Clear conclusion (C) At least two developed reasons (R1 and R2) Evidence and/or examples (Ev and Ex) Indicator words A counter argument (CA) A response to the counter argument (RCA) Another example: RWales is a very wet country EvThe Met Office reports that for the last 10 years it has had 3 inches of rain every month CSo it is a country to avoid for camping holidays For example: R1England football team have the world ranking number one goal keeper. R2Their strikers have also scored lots of goals this season. ExFor example, England beat Brazil 7 – 0 in the match last Saturday. CSo, England must have one of the best football teams in the world at the moment.

Homework- Does a curfew discriminate against young people? Analyse the real sources using the guideline sheet and complete the tasks/ tables etc in your books (you get sources in the exam to analyse like this!)
