History of Android Operating System Release in Beta in November 200 7 First Commercial Version Android 1.0 released in September 2008. Android is ongoing development by Google & Open Handset Alliance. Since April 2009, Android versions have been developed under a codename and released in alphabetical order: Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. As of 2012, over 400 million active devices use the Android OS worldwide.[
