Largest World Cities

GOAL: To use maps and data to explain patterns of population and movement OBJECTIVES: TLW Locate the largest urban areas in the world in several time periods Describe the pattern of urban settlement in each period Explain some economic, geographic or political reasons for the location of the largest cities in each period

Largest World Cities At what point in history did a city in the Western Hemisphere make the top ten list? In the year 500 CE, Teotihuacan, Mexico had a population of 125,000, becoming #6 on the Largest World Cities list. It did not appear on any other list after this, and it was 1900 before any other Western Hemisphere city appeared.

Largest World Cities When was the first time a city had at least a million people? What city? Beijing, China reached a population of 1.1 million in 1800

Largest World Cities Europe had at least one city on the list from 100 CE until what year? In 1950, London, Paris, Ruhr (Germany) and Moscow were on the list. By 2000, no European country made the top ten list.

Largest World Cities Using your map, answer the following: What time period is represented on your map? Write one or two statements about the pattern shown on this map. What might be one economic, geographic or political reason for the location of one or more of the largest cities in this period?

Largest World Cities Using a map of a time period either immediately preceding, or immediately after your map, compare the patterns. What cities have either dropped off or been added? What new regions are represented? What event or events could have caused the change?

Largest World Cities Using the population tables, or maps on a timeline, choose a city that is on at least three lists. Describe its population changes and the change in its relative location at each period in history.
