Meriden C of E Primary School INSET TRAINING Tuesday 15 th September 2015

Session Aims:- Programme Introduction Why Meriden? Universal actions – KS2 teaching Online approaches Indicated actions – tackling incidents Looking forward Questions

Programme Introduction:- An innovative anti bullying programme developed using cutting edge research on bullying and incorporating experiences from previous intervention programmes used around the world. Four key features:- 1.Versatile practical materials 2. Virtual learning environment 3. An emphasis on the responsibility of every pupil in school 4. Holistic approach for staff

Why Meriden? Despite all of the great work put into school since September, plus the positive message from HMI in May, we are still in need of a robust teaching programme to support the needs of our children. We need a strong, visual message to support parents also. Having rolled out Peer Mediators, this will also support the lunchtime supervisors in tackling incidents and identifying genuine cases of bullying from the usual playground fall outs.

Universal Actions Whole school lesson plans designed to prevent bullying. Programme split in to 2 units:- Unit 1 is taught throughout Yr 3 and revisited in Yr 4 Unit 2 is taught throughout Yr 5 and revisited in Yr 6 Each unit containing 10 lessons. Each lesson is split into parts 1 and 2. Each lesson should last approximately 1.5 hours or split into 2 x 45 minute sessions.

Universal Actions (cont.) Each lesson usually finishes with a rule e.g. ‘We will not join in with bullying!’ Explore Unit 1 lesson 2 :- Review/ warm up exercise Teach – ‘Emotions’ Group activities Visualisation exercise

Indicated Actions Used once a case of bullying has come to the attention of the school staff. Indicated actions refer to an adult intervention in an emerged case of bullying by addressing the children involved in the bullying as well as helping and supporting the victimised pupil. The indicated actions follow a staged approach from both the class teachers and the KiVa team. (Up to 4 people who are nominate to coordinate the programme and undertake the indicated actions.) Two different approaches are recommended for the discussion with the children who have taken part in the bullying: Confrontational or Non Confrontational.

Indicated Actions (Cont.) ScreeningCompleted by adult who is first to know about the bullying. (Form 1) Discussion with the victimCompleted by 1or 2 KiVa team members. (Form 2) Discussion with individual pupils involved in the bullying As above (Form 3) carried out preferably on the safe day with pupils mentioned in the above discussion. Group discussion with the pupils who have taken part in the bullying As above (Form 4) again preferably on the same day to strengthen the decisions made individually. Discussion between class teacher and several classmates Competed by class teacher of victim along with several class members who can support the victim further. Follow up discussionsCompleted by initial KiVa team with both the victim and also the other pupils involved.
