Alastair Fairfull Improving Teaching and Learning using ‘Evidence Based’ methods

Who am I? Alastair Fairfull 20 years in SEBD special schools 8 years as LA SEN Adviser Currently your AfA Achievement Coach (AF just read the bit from David Laws speech to the North of England Education conference, 16th Jan 2014 to prove we are at the cutting edge)

Two Groups 1. Be two groups of three 2. TASK: Write down the top 5 most effective teaching influences/methods (that produce the biggest effects on learning). 2 minutes only

Session Contents…. Practical stuff…… 1.Create TACs- done that- but what is it?! 2.Watch Video about ‘evidence-based’ teaching (EBT) 3.Choose one technique 4.Learn a bit about it ……..all in just over one hour

Resources All the Resources we are using you can find on my website: GoTo…… SENplus.ltd.uk See EBT page…. Watch John Hattie’s videos- use timings

Evidence Based Teaching John Hattie- Visible Learning part 1 There are 138 influences- watch the video to see his cogent discussion of what doesn’t work- we don’t have time now. John Hattie- Visible Learning part 2 The rest is about Teaching methods that work. We are going to choose ONE.

How right were you? Quick Feedback….. Most interesting thing you gained from video? Quick Quick

Why are we sat here? Vision- ‘improve teaching and learning’ Problem- How? Solution- Action! Problem- how do we ensure Action? Solution…… create TACs

Teachers’ Action Cooperative (because traditional CPD does not result in change- remembering open plan classrooms) Only teachers can change teaching Changing teaching is itself a learning process (always striving for outstanding learning) Learning requires: a challenge, opportunity to practice, feedback on success, support to continue and/to improve.

TAC Process 1.Decide on skill to develop (challenge) a)Use Active Learning this time 2.Practice on own a)we all make mistakes and learn from them- 10 times to be confident 3.Invite a member of TAC to observe 4.Discuss the observation (Feedback) 5.Feedback to larger Group ( ) 6.Decide on next most effective ‘EBT’ strategy

Today’s EBT choice- Active Learning Active Learning- Mel SilvermanActive Learning- Mel Silverman (watch video) Scan H’outs / downloads for below… EBT- Why Active Learning Works Teaching Without TalkingTeaching Without Talking (watch video) EBT- Active Learning- Teaching Without Talking Active Learning and Teaching Methods- KS3- Northern Ireland

Next… You…. 1.choose an Active Learning technique 2.practice in your own space (talk) 3.invite a TAC person to watch (talk) 4.talk about it afterwards (and adjust?) 5. attend Feedback and share… deadline choose a new TOP TEN EBT method 7.re-cycle

Next session Date: Learn About the Top Ten EBT Methods!!! END
