TPR James Archer – language learning starts with understanding and ends with production Babies spend many months listening before speaking Students will begin to speak, though with many errors, and will gradually become more target-like

TPR Characteristics Meaning over form Listening from day one; Ss do not speak right away T’s input is i+1, advanced of the Ss but understandable (Low) Affective Filter – anxiety is reduced, self confidence ^ What are some things we can do to help students in this regard?

TPR Principles Reduce stress Teacher is director Ss will be ready to speak hours after instruction Fours steps T models T combines commands to create flexibility Ss learn to read and write commands Ss issue commands (expand later with games, etc.)

Remember… Interaction depends on the situation Sometimes T speaks, sometimes T is non-verbal The L1 can be used to introduce TPR but is seldom used afterwards Don’t introduce commands too quickly Help students feel successful by mastering ~3 at a time

TPR 日本語のレッソン 立て 座って ドアへ指を指して ドアへ歩けて 向いて 飛んで

A Colors, Shapes, Sizes Long/longer/longest, etc. 2.TPR techniques (use all 3 if you can) Using commands to direct behavior Role reversal with teacher Action sequence 3.What kind of materials you need By the end of the lesson students will be able to _______________ by ___________________________.
