Major joint initiative for healthy eating/lifestyle in Basingstoke A Shared Plan to Improve Health and Wellbeing in Basingstoke and Deane : Aims to: – Reduce obesity – Keep older people independent – Increase physical activity and promote wellbeing

The Cook and Eat Programme: Hampshire School Meals provider developed program in partnership with Hampshire Primary Care Trust and Borough Councils. Aims – reduce obesity in children – promote the health and wellbeing of school children within Hampshire using school meal recipes. The programme consists of six weekly sessions for children and their parents. – practical cooking skills – healthy eating tips – food hygiene and safety – how to budget and reduce food bills – how to create menus for the family.

Sexual Health

Hampshire County Council – target to reduce the teenage conception rate by 45% to 19.8 per 1000 young women aged in 2010 – Since 1998 Hampshire’s conception rate has declined by 5.4% compared to the national reduction of 13.9%

Sexual Health Services Basingstoke & North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust provides walk-in and appointment-only services, including STI and HIV/AIDS screening, GU medicine and psychosexual counselling Most local GP surgeries and pharmacies provide Chlamydia testing kits, primarily aimed at the age range Basingstoke Rape and Sexual Abuse Crisis Centre is a registered charity run by volunteers, which provides confidential support for individuals who may be reluctant to seek advice directly from health care services or the police. Services such as Freedom Youth and Get Real provide support, practical advice and local social events for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or transgender under 26 year olds in Basingstoke.

Sexual Health messages aimed at adults in their 40s, 50s and 60s Posters and leaflets, such as these from Hampshire Community Healthcare Trust, can be found in locations such as public libraries and GP surgeries in Basingstoke, in response to the rise in STIs among older age groups.

Smoking

Drugs and Alcohol - Youth Catch 22 24/7 – Works with young people under 19 – team of specialist support workers, social-work qualified workers, parent and family workers. – Provides service within community and Hampshire Youth Offending Service

Disability and Health

Key providers are charities, Scope and See Ability. The North Hampshire Hospital offers – dedicated stroke unit offering outpatient and ongoing rehabilitation – drop in clinics (Sight Loss once weekly and twice weekly clinic run by the Adult Care Services Manager).

Disability and Health Good level of service for mental health, substance misuse, learning disabilities Focus is on improving accessibility for physically disabled people rather than improving health Little provision of Day Centres or targeted health services for physically disabled in area

Homelessness and Health

Homelessness in Basingstoke Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council have 5,500 applicants on the Housing Needs Register and only 400 properties becoming available every year. To date this year, the local council have had 759 applicants who ‘had reason to think they were homeless or threatened with homelessness’. 

Homelessness and health Homeless people are less likely to access primary care More likely to be admitted to hospital as an emergency Enter the healthcare system when their condition has deteriorated meaning longer in hospital. Homeless population were more likely to access mental health and substance dependence services. (DOH 2010) Research conducted by Homeless Link found homeless less likely to access GP services

Homeless Services available May Place House – Funded by Hampshire County Council offers accommodation and support in life skills Stonham – Backed by Basingstoke and Deane – provides homeless young people aged supported lodging and a support plan e.g. budgeting, learning to cook.

The Camrose Centre – Charity drop-in centre for 4 hours 2 days per week – Services offered include advice and information, laundry and bathing facilities, clothing, free breakfast and lunch, medical facilities, ear acupuncture Basingstoke First Point – Funded by Hampshire County Council – Provide assistance with finding suitable accommodation accessing community services, education, training healthcare, daily living skills, and mental health.
