How to determine if a book is nonfiction or fiction. Grade 3 Library Lesson

How To Tell If A Book Is Nonfiction?  Realistic pictures.  Facts.  Animals in the book do not talk.

How To Tell If A Book Is Fiction?  Pictures are not realistic.  Opinions are often used in the book.  Animals in the book talk.

Lesson Plan  Read the book The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle (Fiction).  Read Monster Bugs by Lucille Recht Penner (Nonfiction).  Do a Venn Diagram on the differences in the two books.

The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle  The pictures do not look realistic.  Opinions are stated.  The crickets have feelings.

Monster Bugs by Lucille Recht Penner  The pictures look realistic.  Facts about many different bugs are mentioned.

What Do Both Books Have In Common?  Both books are about bugs.

Follow Up Activity  Read Dogzilla by Dav Pilkey (Fiction).  Read Dogs by Melanie Miller (Nonfiction).  Have the students do a Venn Diagram on the books.
