The interview Activity 1

Objectives 1 Recall prior knowledge Types of questions in the interview Examples of the 3 types of questions Analyzing an interview Interviewer skills

Recall prior knowledge What is a survey? What are the method used for surveying? Based on what we choose the method? What are the advantages of each method? What are the tool used in each method?

Types of questions in the interview Structured interview (close/ended) Unstructured interview (open/ended) Semi/Structured interview (mixed) What are the advantages and disadvantages of these types of questions? How to ask them?

Examples of the 3 types of questions Structured Do you think that Qatar should bid for the 2016 Olympics? Semi/Structured (Likert scale, Dichotomus etc) Unstructured What do you think about Qatar biding for the 2016 Olympics? Semi/Structured Do you think that Qatar should bid for the 2016 Olympics?…….. Why?

Analyzing an interview Activity 2 Analyze the transcript of the interview: 1. What type of interview is this? (Structured, Unstructured or semi/structured) 2. Which are open/ended and which close/ended questions? 3. Are the questions biased/leading questions?

Interviewer skills Interviewer must: Make the interviewee feel comfortable Be flexible Notice all gestures, facial expressions, behaviours and attitude of interviewee Understand when it is necessary to ask open/ended questions to have better results Do not influence the interviewee with your gestures

Interview process1 Make the segmentation Design the interview Seek for “Informed Consent”of chosen respondent/s if they agree to be interviewed, explain the purpose and inform them about all they need to know (see ethics of survey)

Interview process2 Ask to the chosen respondent/s an appointment: time, venue, permission to record etc. (if interviewer decide the venue should be prepared with a friendly atmosphere, not noisy, neutral without influences for the interviewee) Estimate the length of the interview (you cannot conduct it in 2 times or be interrupted etc) Record the interview (important to listen and transcribe the answer to code them easily)

Interview process2 Notice the interviewee behaviour, attitudes.. Make a blue/print Remember questions should be: 1. Clear 2. Non leading 3. Avoid jargon 4. One at a time 5. Use KISS method

How to collect interview data Before designing the interview: Decide the purpose The results you need to get Decide the methods of analysis Decide how to present results/findings Interview process How to collect interview data

Homework Choose a topic of your interest Design an interview Defining what is the purpose Define how you will collect data Define how you will analyze data Define how you will present data

Thank you Questions?
